Just changed the battery on my Freelander, why do I have to press the brake to start the engine ?

Fairly sure I didn't have to do that before ?

It would help to know the year of the freelander?

But if it's an automatic, then pressing the brake to start it is pretty common.

None of my autos, 2002, 2003 need brake pressed to start. Brake pedal to slip out of park yes, but not to start engine.

Dunno what is going on there.!?!?

Yeah its weird, if I don't press the brake it refuses to start and just makes a loud solenoid type click.....I was about 30 seconds away from hitting the starter motor with a hammer....as in the good old days,,

    And another thing....

I have the tailgate handle to re-attach....seems quite a common issue....the original bolt had snapped out of the plastic but are rusted beyond repair.
One of the wires has snapped but this is easily repairable.

What's the recommended way.....roofing bolts and epoxy resin ?

Same with my 2005 TD4 SE.
However brake pedal to start might have come along as a later update? I know the auto FL2 definitely needs the brake to be pressed (or clutch on a manual), or it won't start.
The only way to put the ignition on is to press the start button, without a foot on the brake (auto) or foot off the clutch (manual), or it starts straight up.

So it is trying to turn the starter. The power to the brake lights must be changing something, never seen anything like it but have you tried switching something else on?? Say headlights?
Could be the starter solenoid contacts can't cope with the new battery and the increase in current and so turning something else on reduces the battery voltage a bit??
    Just a theory!?!?

If it won't crank then try as you suggested & tap the starter motor & if it works strip it (the starter motor) & clean/replace the contacts & check the terminal post whilst ya there.

Hi Guys, I doubt its a starter motor issue as it starts fine when I press the footbrake pedal
