I've spotted the x-eng 'x-fan' which is a twin thermostat in a sexy anodised aluminium thingy... It'll replace the power sapping fixed fan - the idea is to have a small fan triggered at a low-ish temp then if things get really hot, a larger one is switched on.

What I need to know is, what size fans can I get away with? I've only got a2.5NA (hence the need to claw back some bhp!) so no intercooler to worry about, just a massive radiator...

It is a defender you're talking about I presume?

I think the electric fan I've just put in mine is a single 14 inch. It fits well for the radiator size. I think if it were much bigger making the brakets up would be more difficult.

Tbh I don't think your idea to have two fans wired at different temperatures is a very good one. Unless youre sitting in stop start traffic whilst towing a bus on a boiling day I can't imagine your big fan will ever be used. For normal use, once you're driving at more than about 20 mph, the normal airflow cools the rad. The fan shouldn't be on.

You might as well save your money, just get an adequately sized fan and only one circuit.

If you do have cooling issues, maybe you've got other issues such as a broken thermostat or clogged radiator.

i made an exact circuit that you want about a week ago from 2 fans, 2 relays, and 2 different temp thermostatic switches, i added in an override and an all off too

It's a fixed fan on my defender. Never had cooling issues.

My brother is scrapping a Mondeo soon, so I'll have the single one off that think it's a 16".

I am planning a trek across the pyrenees into Barcelona next summer, so don't want to take any chances! (and the x-eng jobby looks cool!)

any details, diagrams, pics etc?

i just knocked up a diagram,
fansetup-1.jpg

Basicly i have 1 switch to turn it off or on, 2 more switch's (or a single double pole switch), that give power either straight to the relay to turn on the fan/fans or power through the thermostatic switches that will turn on the fan/fans once it reaches switching temps.
the advantage of this is u can use as big of a relay as u want to run big ol fans

I just fitted a fan from a Volvo it's has two speeds, I used two relays to make the slow speed come on by a switch and the fast speed come on by aircon switch in thermostat housing and an all off switch
