Evening all looking for a few pointers if you would be so kind, got back to the UK yesterday, ( car been garaged since xmas) reconnected battery on the old girl (96 DSE) twice on the glow plugs and tried to start, fired once then nothing just turning over, retried several times and after much cranking eventually started, took out for a good run and filled up with fuel, stopped and started a few times no problem. Today will fire on initial turn after glows and only start after a good cranking sessions hot or cold? Am thinking glow plugs, in tank pump or relay, am also only getting 17 mpg so maybe EGR problem as well but that shouldn't effect starting? Any ideas appreciated Thanks in advance.

Glow plugs first port of call for starting problems when cold. When hot tired injection pump, injection pump timing.

Wammers cars was starting fine prior to garaging at Xmas, but a set of glow plugs won't go amiss, it's the same hot or cold so am assuming either needs heat or lack of fuel? Must say I was surprised the battery lasted long enough to start it after standing so long!

You could check the in tank pump. But it won't effect hot starting on your motor, it only runs with glow plugs or when engine is running on a 96. No lift pump on cranking on your car. You can check clear pipe for air and bleed it if there is any, that may help. Crack the injectors one at a time whilst it's running to get any air out of injection pump and lines. Hot starting may settle down after a good bit of running. Cold start has to be glow plugs i would think.

No EGR on a 96.
Worth checking leak off pipes and look for air in the fuel line, but as it's stood since Christmas it could well be bacterial growth in the fuel tank. Check the fuel filter for black slime.
Always leave the car with a full tank as this will reduce the risk of bacterial growth in the fuel which occurs due to condensation forming.

Just to close this out, checked leak offs and found the blanking one on No 6 had split, so changed the lot and new blanking cap ( short piece of pipe with a self tapping screw for now) changed glow plugs and all is well again. Thanks for the pointers.
