Hi All
Have had my p38 DSE for a couple of weeks now. I have been driving it carefully to see what I could get to gallon. 55-60 on cruise control on 40 mile journey on dual carriage way and getting 21 mpg. This seems to be less than others here on the forum. Yesterday thought Id see how she went so botted her and off she went like a rocket until we were doing about sixty and it suddenley felt as if I had run out of fuel. Took my foot off of accelorator and tried again to accelerate and still felt like no fuel. Came toa roundabout and slowed down and car was fine the other side as I was driving normal again. Any ideas of where to start? Starts first time cold or warm so am leaning to being fuel related.

could be the in tank pump getting weak and not flowing enough fuel. you'll need to do a delivery rate check on it, I can't remember the values and my rave discs have been lost! I'm sure someone on here will be able to give the values that it should be.
 
Update

Set cruse control to 85 and all was ok until a hill when same thing happened. Car dropped a gear and then nothing and had to pull in to slow lane and wait for hill to be climbed. I agree with you Clutchdust that It is probably the pump. I have a rave cd but cannot fing the values that suggest.

I've just read your post , please read this description & see if it sound familiar:

The problem with my P38 2.5 DSE was that when I used the gearbox kick down at speed or sometimes when just cruising at speed or just going up a hill, the vehicle just lost all drive, engine was still revving but the vehicle slows down as if it has run out of fuel, if I knock the gearbox into neutral while coasting and wait for revs to hit tick over then put back into drive this rectifies the problem for a while.....

After nearly a year of searching for problems down the "fuel route", I have found that my Rangie was actually in the throws of a transmission / auto clutch failure which gradually just got worse & has just cost me just over £1700 to fix.

I hope this is of some help to you & gives you another avenue of attack & ends up leading you to sorting out your problem.

Problem sorted the lond way. Got the new fuel pump and fitted it and went for a test drive. No problems got to 80 set cruise and went down dual carriage way for 10 miles of slightly down hill. At next junction turned off and booted it back the other way. Car was fine for about 1/2 mile and then the same problem car slows as the engine is under load. I got the car home and started under the bonnet by tightening all jubilee clips on fuel and air lines and then started her up and sounds as before OK. Whilst she was running I thought about the relay and fuses so I opened the fuse box and pulled the relay with the car running , thinking she would die and to my amazment she was still running. Quick spray with WD40 and swapped relay for heated window relay and went for a test drive and boy she's like a different car. Goes like a rocket and the best bit now appears to be doing 24 mpg instead of the usual 20mpg. Not sure but suspect that the relay was the fault but I am well pleased to have sorted it out. Only problem is I now have a spare fuel pump which will be going on flea bay
 
Keep the pump you will probably need it!! i have had 3 in about 5 years, its just amazing sometimes when you fix things, you almost stumble across the reasons for the fault, and you always suspect the hardest/ most expensive thing first, and it turns out as something simple....a lesson for us all i think!! what relay did you take out and swap over with the heated screen one?
 
In the fuse box there is a relay with a petrol pump picture on it so assumed it was for the fuel pump as I cant see a relay for the filler cap

All you had to do to check the relay was to put the ignition key in the II position put your finger on the relay,(so as you turned it to II you have your finger on the relay at the same time) and you can then feel it click on, put it back in and check again, could have just been a bad connection
 
My concern was that the engine was still running without the relay fitted. I thought that the engine would not run with the relay not fitted so did not think of checking it. Once the relay was out I could see that one of the legs had some sort of coating coming off of it hence changing it and now problem gone
