After driving 200 miles in the Ninety yesterday, I've convinced myself I need to replace the steering box - driving on the motorway was not fun :(

So I'll probably need a new drop-arm, since to get the current one off I'm expecting to have to use Mr AngleGrinder :D

I've been doing a bit of searching, and they typically seem to come with the ball-joint already fitted - but I'm assuming from the price that they're not genuine.

Has anyone fitted a new drop-arm supplied with the ball-joint? Did it last? I've heard some of the after-market ball-joints (particularly the rubber boot) don't last too well. Failing that, are drop-arms without ball-joints available? Ideally I'd like a pattern drop-arm with a genuine ball-joint - seems like the best cost / performance combination. :)

Cheers in advance,
Ian.

If you can borrow or hire a good puller (hydrolic) they come of easy, good bit of tension on it and sometimes a knock with hammer and job done.

you need a late RRC drop arm and the drag link that has a replacable track rod ball joint which are readily available off the shelf. Drop arm isn't too bad to do. please do not use an angle grinder its ****ish way of destroying a perfectly good component because you have failed to get enough oomph to get it off!

there are ways of getting it off! If you were closer i'd get it off for you. I'm in the process of building an hydraulic puller that said i've always got them off even a couple the local garage couldn't.

I don't think I explained myself very well - apologies.

Forget about getting the drop-arm off the box. Both components are knackered so won't be refitted.

My question is - has anyone who has bought a "pattern" drop-arm supplied with a ball-joint already fitted, had any problems with it? Or do they last okay?

Thanks in advance,
Ian.

the only probhlem with fitting later disco rr drag link is you lose your damper fitting on a defender ,disco rr steering damper on track rod

I bought a recon box complete with drop arm and ball joint from paddocks fo rmy last landy. It seemed good quality it was on my last landy for about 5 years before i got rid of the land, ball joint was still ok though, Even better i sent the box back to paddocks with the drop arm on it(they arranged collection from fed ex)

I have had probs with after market ball joint thought. They keep falling out.
well the bottom circlip andcoverplate with spring do, 3 in a row did this left somewhere in a field,
I found that if i go over big bumps when off orading they pop for some reason. I got over it this time by tacking a bit of plate with a stainless washer as a spacer over the bottom. I also drilled and tapped for a grease nipple. If i have to change it in the future it will only be a quick rub with the grinder

Oh forgot to say, Once the box is off it is easier to get the drop arm off, hit the two sides at the same time with hammers(one in each hand) and it will pop of after a few whacks, I mangled a 10 ton hydraulic puller trying to release one before, stretched the legs
