Hi y'all...

i seem to have achieved the impossible today by actually removing my steering drop arm intact!

i used a combination of a legged puller, heat and two mallets

one slight catch... i have the steering box out at the moment, i dont know if what i did would work with the box in situ

anyway, i'm quite pleased it worked so thought i'd post a bit of a guide in case anyone else is stuck

here goes...

1. drop the steering box out (if you're up for it, its not TOO bad a job, i followed buster's guide http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f41/steering-box-renewal-63806.html)

2. careful, it's heavy!

3. attach a legged puller to the shoulders on the drop arm, i also used an irwin ultragrip to hold the legs together and stop them slipping off. Put a good amount of tension on it, but dont over-do it, it will only ping off or slip sideways

4. apply heat to the drop arm with a blow torch all around where the sector shaft splines meet the drop arm. Heat it thoroughly... obviously if it starts to glow red, you might be over-doing it!

at this point you might be lucky and the arm might come off... if not...

5. rest one side of the drop arm on a heavy mallet or similar heavy bit of metal. then give the opposite side a good beating so you're effectively pinching the drop arm between two mallets

... the theory behind this is that while youre whacking the bejeezus out of the joint the metal should flex slightly thus breaking the seal between it and the sector shaft splines

6. next, re-attach the legged puller and gradually increase the tension, with any luck it should pop off....

... thats what i like to see!!

worth a go for anyone who doesnt want to have to destroy the drop arm. I hate to see original parts go to waste

Hope it works for you :)
