P38A Drive problems - This time I think its serious

My 99 DHSE Auto started to sound a bit ropey over the weekend, I assumed that it was an exhaust issue (replaced mid box last week before MOT) as it sounded a louder and felt very slightly lumpy so planned to look at it this week.

This morning as I drove up the ramp of the motorway slip road on full throttle the noise was really loud, could feel it being even more lumpy but what worried me was that there was a smell of burnt clutch about.

Any ideas? Where do I start with the diagnosis?
 
Does the engine run normal out of gear, have you got another part ofthe exhaust gone,check the turbo pipe work as well
 
The smell could just be the new exhaust box 'burning in'

It was definitely that burnt clutch smell rather than exhaust paste. It came and went just during that period of accelerating up the ramp.
Brian - Tick over is slightly jumpy. Is the turbo near the battery as I saw a spot of oil splatter on the brake fluid reservoir.

Yes, that pipe coming up the side into the intercooler comes from it and often starts to fall apart splattering oil. Mine did. Not expensive.
 
It's definitely is the engine. All I have had time to do is just rev it while parked. Sounds really rough and rumbly. Haven't felt much of a change in performance though.

I have had a look and think its the cooling fan. It has lost 3 blades 2 next to each other and another about a 1/4 turn further on. I only had a torch but I think they are quite fresh. Does the fan speed up with engine speed? If it does then I think the noise is due to the uneven fan running faster.
 
The loss of fan blades will make it run lumpy, mine did the same a few years ago on holiday, scared me till I worked out what it was

Got my old fan with the duff core in the shed. If your core is still good you might be able to swap it over?
 
Brilliant Grrrrrr, I only need the blade unit so that would be great as I am having difficulty finding just the blades. PM me about when I can come round.
