Hi all,

The outer ball joint on my 02 Td5 Def 90 recently started squeaking, but had no play. I removed the link, drilled a hole in the top of the joint, tapped some threads and screwed in a grease nipple. However, when I tried to pump in grease it stopped and locked up the joint. Looking in the hole, I could see there was a plate over the top of the actual joint which I can't drill - I imagine the grease put pressure on this to lock up the joint.

How have others fitted grease nipples to ball joints?

Why don't you just replace the ball joint? It's a hell of a lot easier than fitting a grease nipple to it. I've had ones with grease nipples fitted before and they come fitted in the top.

Fair point, but as I say there was no play, just a squeak. I had all the stuff to do the job to hand and it didn't take long.

In the end I just filled the cavity with engine oil, put the grease nipple back in and the squeak has gone for now.
