Hi,

P38 DSe, 2001 auto

First, it has both the ABS and TC lights on. I haven't got round to fixing them yet, but brakes work fine.

Now the issue.. if I apply full throttle from standstill, I get a loud dong donk sound from under the car, seems to be level with the firewall, and central. I don't get the noise at any other time.

Is this just the confused TC firing, or could it be more serious?

I'm driving back to the UK at the end of the week, and the MOT has expired while I am in France. Are TC and ABS lights an automatic MOT failure?

I think any lights on the dash arnt good for an MOT. especially ones related to braking...

Have you checked your propshafts are tight and arnt wobbling about. i know they dont move when your at a standstill but check them anyway if your driving from france

Don't know what your noise is but lamps are an automatic fail.

Thanks, the propshaft are ok, they were checked and greased by the dealer in the summer when the front UJ was replaced.

OXO, I'm assuming you're the same OXO who is active on another forum that I frequent for a rather smaller type of car? I'm guessing we have the same cars outside our respective houses?

That is correct, but the Z is under a snow cover till the spring.

ABS light is a fail. TC light isn't,

(yes I know that the ABS light will be bringing the TC one on as well,)

First thing I would check would be the brake light switch adjustment and go from there if the warnings are still there

Donk Donk on full throtle? Exhaust touching the chassis maybe.
How often is the brake pump running? Really needs diagnostics.
You can get a French CT on English plates.

Don't think brake switch will bring TC lamp on. ABS certainly.

As has been said with reguard to lights on the dash. The ABS being on is an instant fail (this happened to me and a simple reset got rid of it). Could an ABS reluctor ring gone?

As for the donk donk noise, from the rough location you've given I would suspect the moorse chain inside your transfer box has stretched. From what I've read and the research I've done (mine went bang, luckily on my mom's drive (still there now lol)) I would say if you nurse it you *should* be ok, it's when it starts banging all time you need to get your AA card at the ready.

Sounds right. Is it a big job to do?

It looks ok if you have a proper transmission jack, 5/6 bolts connect it to the gearbox, it weighs an absolute ton. If you don't then it could be a right pig. I would suggest draining the oil whilst it's in situ. I need to get around to doing mine but need to get a jack first.

Trolley jack with a big jacking pad and an extra pair of arms helps. It is heavy (112lbs) but it is awkward because you have to lift it off set. A cradle would be best. There are 6 bolts holding it to the gearbox, check the lengths as you take them out and their positions. The Classic has different lengths and if you put the longer ones in the wrong position they will punch through the gearbox casing. Yes , the voice of experience speaking, silicon round the bolt stops it leaking when you put the correct bolt in. Had mine out a while ago(p38) and think they are all the same but it's worth checking. Good advice to drain the oil in situ. Good luck

Well, ****. Just spent over £1500 on a new ABS ECU, ABS pump/reservoir, centre exhaust box.

Looks like I'm driving back to France carefully, and fix it there later..

Well, I have found a garagiste who will take it off and replace the stretched chain. So I need to order the bits.

What parts do I need in addition to the new chain?

Might as well do the bearings and oil seals while it's stripped down.

Sure it's the chain and not a drive shaft? I have the same and I've been told it sounds more like a drive shaft.

Original and unmolested,

Getting to sound like Triggers broom, had it for 20 years and still the same one. 17 new heads and 14 new handles but it's still the same one.
