Does black smoke under load indicate a problem?

Greetings chaps. If I go up a steep hill in 3rd, at quite high revs, and I see definite black smoke coming from the exhaust (not thick, but definitely definite), would you say it's a problem? I get whitey/grey smoke when I turn the engine on, but that clears quickly to no visible smoke. My girlfriend revs the engine up really high when at stand still and gets black smoke as well (much to my distaste... the reving it up high that is). I'm just wondering if it's normal for that to happen. On another note, is it bad for the engine to be reved high in neutral, or even when rolling.. to get up the hill outside my house, I hear my girfriend racing the engine in 2nd before going up to 3rd, and it makes me cringe :( It's supposed to be 4,000 rpm max but I can't really tell by the sound what it's doing.

Cheers for any advice. Tom.

First off check your air filter is clean. If not then sling a new one on. Then check there are no splits in your turbo pipes. Check also that the pipes haven't de-laminated.

If all this is good then I would suggest you clean your intercooler and blank off your eger valve. It could well be faulty.

Not that I want to hijack the thread.......but since we've been getting lighter mornings I've noticed when I get down the steep hill from my house I get a some smoke, looks like burning oil, clears up in about ten seconds and is fine from then on, not sure why......could it be oil in intercooler/hoses running into the engine cos I'm on a steep downward slope?

Cheers chaps. I should have mentioned that it's a 2.5na, so no turbo craziness to deal with :) I should have also mentioned what I've done with it recently:

oil change, new oil level is about 3mm below the high mark on the dip stick
new air filter
new fuel filter
diesel cleaning additive (including putting it in the fuel filter when I replaced that)

...and other stuff not related to the fuel system..

I got my timing belt done today as well :) Haven't figured out if that's got anything to do with that, as it was dark when I picked it up.

Cheers for any further tips. I'm gonna post about my brakes dragging to one side now :)
