Dodgy Diff (With vid)

Iv narrowed my vibration down at last!

Its coming from my rear diff, its very noisey and loads of vibration coming from it!

I enlisted the help of me mate to film the diff flange while i drove enough for me to make the noise occur! See vid below.

Iv taken the rear prop off now (Diff lock on) and drives smooth as owt!
The prop is new and all UJ's are as new still!

You can see the prop as though sumet is making it snag in the vid!

easy thro the diff away and put another one on,or rebuild the flange assembly on the one ya got..2nd hand diffs i get for £40

If that's a 90 I've got a diff that'll fit it.

I just put that one on aswell :doh: second hand 40 quid, fitted about a montha ago.

Was from a disco and looked more than fine inside with regards to gear wear.

Would a bearing cause it to do that you recon?

Good work fella! I am going to do this test too now. Luckily I have a good spare 12 spline sitting in my garage if needs be.... I am running smoother now with my front prop off - a wee bit of vibration but no grinding noises. Still think I can live with the altered steering behaviour and get those castor correction bushes out so that the angle at the t box flange isn't so sharp on my double carden prop.

Have ye got a lift on yer motor? The angle looks to be kinda steep between the prop and axle. Are there any rub marks on yer prop where the ujs are??

looks like uj's to me as well. catches in the same place both times. like there isn't enough clearance, caused by too steep an angle

Hi mate its got a 2 inch lift on it Buster! Its seems bizzare as iv never had a problem before until i swapped the diff (Old one went!)

Theres no signs of any rubbing on the joints of the props!

Iv checked the UJ's mate, no damage or play and still as new.

it's lifting the diff output shaft as it rotates - if the UJ is free to move in all directions (when it's off), lift both wheels off the ground and ensure the diff rotates freely and that there's no play at the output flange

OK Mate will try that now, this is with the prop off when i jack back end up and look for play??

Scott that looks like classic binding on the yokes - the way they catch before turning. What was the outcome in the end? I have a new t box in and the castor correction bushes removed. Put new Uj's on the double carden. Still getting vibration. Mechanic says diffs are fine. I'm wondering whether to just live with it or sell the land rover... sadly. Unbelievable after all this time - it's only a 2 inch lift.

That was spot on mate!

£160 quid later and a new 'wide angle propshaft' later and a very happy Scott!
