Do pre TD4 diesel and petrol Freelanders use the same gearbox?

Hi All

In an attempt to cure my vibration I may pick up a s/hand gearbox for my 2000 2.0L diesel Freelander and fit it whilst I get my gearbox overhauled by a mate inhis spare time.

So is a 98 1.8 petrol engine gearbox the same as my '00 2.0L diesel one?

If not how can i identify a 2.0L diesel gearbox? Does it have a code or special number on?

Many thanks.

just checked a few sites they only mention 3 boxes 1 is the jatco auto and 2 manuals TRC102900. 1.8 petrol and TRC103580 diesel so guess they maybe different someone will tell you for deffs if they can be swapped hope this helps...cartman690...

diesel box is made by getrag and is totally different to 1.8 petrol, the getrag manual is the only manual for td4 so u should have no issues gettin right one if you ask for td4 manual gearbox,

you say u have vibration, does this work its way through the gearstick, if so you might just need to cut the damper down on the gear linkage which is connected to the gearbox, doesnt always work but worth a go :)

HI Mate

Thanks for the reply. Mines the earlier 2.0L non BMW diesel. Does it have the same gearbox as a TD4 then?

The vibration I have comes through the car between 1500 - 2000 rpm and is really pronounced at 1750 in 4th gear! It is there in the other gears but a lot less noticable? Funnily enough trawling the net i found this post on another forum. It's years old, but I've emailed the guy anyway.

I'll get the car up on ramps again at the weekend and see if I can find this damper. If it had already been cut down would it be obvious?

Hopefully with the skid tray thing removed i can have a better look round at everything else. Apparently the IRD brackets can break as well, although I think that maybe petrol models?

oic i thought you were comparing td4 and 1.8 petrol.

ur deisel is also diiferent box to the td4

hello

i tried to mate up a 1.8 box to a 98 diesel when i was thinking of doing a conversion and it wouldn't mate up so i say different
