Hi guys, well after 12 months of almost trouble free (ecu lock out, exhaust blow, sticky rear caliper slider) motoring in my second/first drivable p38 4.0, I thought I may aswell take the plunge this week as I'm off work and sort out some niggly jobs. Mainly one of the oil leaks (I hope). Looks like it's leaking from the rear of valley gasket. Now my question is do I or don't I just bite the bullet and change the head gaskets while its already half stripped? Its not likely to unveil damaged liners is it? The car has 230k on it with a replacement engine at 80k, so, one I'm hoping judging by the mileage the engines good and hoping two that when the engine was replaced 150k ago it was with a top hat variety.
Now the reason for possible change of head gaskets is, one start of the month I had Island 4x4 deliver me a service kit and a head gasket set (Britpart). Two, its already half stripped to change the valley gasket and three, at some point I've got to fix an exhaust leak which could possibly be a manifold crack on the right bank.

i would leave heads alone if no hgf signs ,exhaust manifold gaskets are bound to be blowing, valley gasket and 2 x seal quite easy to do ,when tightening inlet manifold bolts go over a couple of times as composite gasket gives and by the time youve torqued last bolt first will be loose if its got top hat liners they cant slip thats the whole idea they have flange around the top so that crack in bore behind liner cant let gasses down between the two
