Hi, been trying to look into how easy it would be to try and do panel repair myself rather than a pro shop, wont get as good finish but any tips or tricks?

Lots of little dings and a few bumps. All ideas welcome thanks
 
Dents and dings are pretty easy to tap out with the panels being ali alloy. You need a wooden former or sand bag on the outside. Then it's down to what paint finish you want. DIY or paint shop.

It depends for starters on the paint colour. If it's a solid then repairs will be a little easier, if metallic the painting really needs to be done with proper mixed paint and a spray gun. It also depends on age of paint, if older you may need to use an autobody supply shop with colour match service.

Basically, tap any dents out you can, sand the panel or area if you are just going to try and fade the paint in, and lightly fill with decent quality body filler, get a big tin of it and don't be scared to discard stuff if it starts to harden wait and mix up more. I think I got 3Kg tin for £15 from an autobody shop.

Follow the Mighty Car Mod's info and away you go.

You will need to spend a fair bit of time with various grit sandpapers to get the panel looking great and don't be scared to go back and spot fill any little imperfections. Good thing with the Defender is almost all the panels are flat so you can employ mechanical sanding assistance!

Ensure you clean ALL the sanding dust away before going near it with any primer as the dust will stop adhesion and your lovely primer coat will just peel off!
