I am having problems with my discovery 1. I can start it but when i turn the key off the engine wont stop. Any ideas???

Sounds like you have a sticking fuel stop solonoid.
I have checked the steering lock which i have difficulty getting the key to turn.

Symptoms

When i enter the key with the door open i do not get the warning bleeper when the door is open unless i push the key fully into the barrel.

Secondly the engine has suddenly not just started on the first kick of the key. It takes 3 or 4 turn then fires but does not catch fully for 2-3 seconds even with the throttle pressed.

I can enter the key into the barrel turn it to the ignition is on ( no warning bleeper at this point with the door open) . I can then remove the ignition switch and attempt to start with a screwdriver and it won,t start. I think the barrel is not registering the key initially and not linking this to the ignition circuit.

How well does the lock turn without the switch attached? Does it turn freely or is it still sticky?

The ignition switch turns a bit iffy have to wiggle key until it will turn.
I have checked the power to the fuel stop solenoid with the ignition on and get pwer to it and the engine starts. It used to start first time but takes a few turns to fire. Then labours for about 2-3 seconds before it revs cleanly.

When i switch the ignition off the power to the solenoid is cut "as it should" but sometimes the engine keeps on running for sometimes up to about 30-40 seconds and will stop.

The fault is intermittent which would suggest that the solenoid is sticking.

I can only assume that it is faulty and this is also is causing the starting problem. Once started it runs fine.

I have ordered a new solenoid but on looking at the solenoid on the pump there does not seem to be much room to unscrew it as i think it will foul on the underside of the pump top.

Have you ever changed one and if so will it clear enough in order that it will come out.
