how are you going to get it out, a simple 4.5 oil change once a year is more than adequate
very easy just a little knowledge is all that is needed on how a transmsission works and you will probably find that its aproxx 8 litres +

also what about the filter and magnets inside the transmission do they clean them selves ?

its 9 litres, i rebuild them so am aware of how they work, but unless you go to the unnecessary expense of flushing and filling at a garage etc changing the 4.5 litres you can easily by removing the drain plug oil once a year is more than adequate, the filter is a steel gauze and is cleaned by the fresh oil,

so you should know that you can actually perform your own flush by dropping the oil cooler return hose into a bucket while pumping in new oil

yes but whose going to go to the unnecessary bother of that
you never know that some one may have burnt tranny oil..but good luck only changing some of it

I thought you said you rebuild them since when does adding in new oil clean the filter ..and if this true where does the dirt then go ? back around the system please mate be real

its standard practice with auto boxes, and manufacture instruction, experience shows it works, if you change it regular as i said you wont have any dirt ,your welcome to waste your money

I have to agree with jamesmartin , i only change the 4.5 at a time once a year,

would you only change half of your engine oil ?
would you only change half of the transferbox and diff oils

as for wasting money its only the cost of an extra 4 litres of oil and about 10 minutes to do regardless if is clean that comes out doesn't mean to say the viscosity of the oil is good
to add a little bit more time on the job its allways best to remove pan also and inspect and clean this is common practice also even just changing the pan oil

youve obviously no idea about servicing an auto, you can do all that and it isnt easy ,but regular change as i suggested is all thats needed, those autos dont make any dirt until they fail, once a year oil change is changing the oil is far before service schedule and so keeps box healthy

I wasn't trying to argue with you but considering I also work on and rebuild many types from small up to heavy transmissions... but changing half of its oil most of its life is silly not to forget the age and wear of the transmission

I have no issues servicing mine ... as you know heat on any transmission is the biggest killer and not just dirt but washing out clutch packs or clutch bands valve body oil pump also goes along way considering the TC and cooling lines holds oil also

as for me its a piece of mind changing as much oil as I can ....reason being my transmission does not get an easy life... and we both know its costly to rebuild a transmission even if we do it our self ... for what its worth that tiny bit of extra cost for an extra 4 litres of oil is actually worth it.... if your like me and purchase things in bulk some times this actually works out cheaper in the long run

as for being a hard job preparation is key ..it amazing what you can do with a 20 litre hand barrel pump

changing oil once a year means that until theres a failure the oil is fresh,
its not a tiny bit of work unless you go to a specialist that has the gear to flush /fill and you use considerably more oil than the box max fill

Partial oil changes are a common technique with rally big engines.

Some rail operators do them.

As long as regular also work with gearboxes. Not the best method but better than no oil change

not necessarily you only pump in what you need but at the same time monitor what comes out ,,this gives the tc and cooler and lines time to expel any old oil like I said preparation is key not rocket science once you do this more than once it becomes natural

its unnecessary, the cooler pipe on a td5 delivers a hell of a flow, without the gear its unwise

not exactly a big engine in question nor is it a really big transmission system either

like I said preparation is key once again once you have done it a few times it becomes naturel

a good quality barrel pump will keep up on demand while engine is running but all depends if its up to you to keep pumping ..a bit of elbow greese never killed any one right or is it just to hard ? like I said it wont take long but you may have to move quick and plan ahead while monitoring ... sorry to inform you but this is multitasking not many people are good at....
now if your any good at maths or working out that a 20 litre barrel when its half full it hold 10 litres now half again 1/4 = 5 litres not rocket science mate ...I thought you said you rebuild these things so you should be good working with numbers

the whole objective is to remove 8 litres of oil while 8 litres of oil is pumped in like I say not rocket science

this is as close as you will get to a real transmission flush on your own driveway ..

no its not rocket science , its just unnecessary

maybe for some but not for me as I work mine hard

the only time I do half changes is on my fish tank
anybody thats worked in a lr dealer or independent will have changed auto oil as i described, its std practice and works boxes if serviced are out lasting the chassis, changing one a year is at least half of lrs recommended mileage,if you want t flush /fill thats up to you,
