There's no real way of redesigning it. I mean, it works the way it works, but it also has side effects. An HD bumper for instance doesn't have many serious drawbacks in the off road world, so we're all happy to use them. A snorkel aswell, etc etc.

A steering guard of course isn't as set in stone as that.

Some of the challenge guys are using guards made up of 30mm bar, so it does the same job but with less of a scoop. Arguably stronger made out of bar aswell.

The track rod protector works well. The QT front guard of course does that job on a lesser scale. Does take a lot of the weight off the bar.

HD bars are a must. I would recommend the Terrafirma bars, supplied with greaser joints for about £100.

You can easily weld some box onto the QT guard and make up the same principle. You can't directly fit the Glyn Lewis guard to the axle with the QT guard anyway so there's still mods to be done.

All that said, I've had HD bars, QT guard and no steering guard for the best part of 18 months, I've been over, under or through the worst that northern England and Wales could throw at it (albeit with an element of care but often a battering of v8 power) and its all supa dupa.

Ive been thinking about designing a axle mounted steering guard, as it would move with the arms and not act as a scoop.
 
could try a Extension Spring between the the arial base and LR body rather than a bungee

just gotta be careful because any metalwork in the area of the coil badly affects performance.

its not great to have the coil mounted under the line of the rooftop tbh, but a spring mounted to the aerial would be worse.

thats why i was thinking bungee or similar. or a plastic bracket?
 
Thanks for the tips. I understand that it isn't great where it is but I wanted it to look nice and be out of the way.

GummyBear - thanks for the idea of mounting it up there, it certainly is the best place.

As for the steering guard, I actually wanted a steering guard originally but have in the past few weeks recognised that my heavy duty steering guards are just as good if not indeed better.
 
So a little problem arose tonight and a little warning to those that have a body lift.

On the top of the engine you have the water hose that runs from the water pump to the heater matrix. The metal pipe had, when I rose the body, crimped the water pipe. I thought it would be fine but over the last 1000 miles, the metal end of the pipe has slowly cut through from the inside. Anyhow it split tonight on the way home and I was surrounded in steam at the roundabout.

Luckily I was just around the corner from home. So when I arrived home I unbolted the pipe which is easy, cut the rubber hose where it had split and then trimmed a little off the metal pipe. Once together it was crimped no more and looked like it should. I guess I should have done it sooner lol

whats the problem with the starter?

Needs a good whack now and again to get it to work. Its just full of water and crap both in the solenoid and the motor itself.

I will be cleaning it out next week as i will have my new toy to mess around in at he weekend

As the missus and I dont seem to get chance to go out for ride and my young son isnt really able to go on the back i thought that i would get something i could use all the time.

mate, dont worry about it, yours isnt looking that bad.

ok so its a fair amount of work but:

its a huge relief when its all done

yours doesnt need that much work

its so much easier when the car is fully stripped.

tis a fair trade tho hornet, i'll let u off for that! me n u both tho, just recently started a little side business to try rake some more in :D. but i've just this minute found holes in both side front wings :( so here we go again...

Well I have learnt the hard way not let worries grind you down. Live for today, work to live and ont rely on the job to define you.

Always wanted a little spots car that's affordable so decided to wait no longer. Plus I get to play more with the disco as running repairs aren't such an issue.

Also, i hope you will be changing the wheels for something a little more track orientated! Bling just doesnt rub me up the right way on one of those twin seaters!

Your sequence of pictures are nice and the finished article is quite well balanced. I hope to do something like that soon once the bumpers and that are done.

The car is a Robinhood 2B plus. It has the standard Pinto block with fast road cam and twin 40's as you would expect in there. I'm going to change it for an all alloy 1600 zetec lump and have my mate build up some bespoke throttle bodies. Just hope I can find a descent lump at the right price for a winter project.

Yeah the wheels don't really go but they are new with new tyres so I can take my time finding some more whilst I finish off the Discovery.
 
So last night i had a look at my hub on the front drivers side. the wheel had about an inch play in it.

Tightened it all up as the bearing nut had come loose and it all seemed OK this morning until the wheel momenterily locked up at 40mph. No bangs or rattles!!

I have had a look and drove it another mile and it all seems fine. Brakes are ok and the wheel doesnt wobble or grind etc, not sure what happened although I havent tried it in diff lock.

Could the CV joint fail without any signs afterward?
