Hi all, if anyone needs to know, this is how you find and change the 'stat on a TD5:

1. Remove the plastic viscous fan cover by releasing the 4 retaining screws;

2. Remove the viscous fan using a 36mm cranked spanner unscrewing in an anti-clockwise direction (RH thread). I found I needed to give it a tap with a lump hammer just to free it off;

3. You will now have good access as per the attached picture, to remove/replace the thermostat.

How did you release the spring pipe clips on the coolant hoses without spending an hour mashing your knuckles before resorting to a dremmel to cut the clips? [Not that I did that of course, just asking hypothetically :) ]

I used pliers on the smaller one and grips on the larger ones, squeeze the lugs together and wriggle them down the pipes.

Pull the pipes off, pull the existing clips off and replace with std screw-type clips.
 
Does the thermostat come complete in housing or just thermo as this is what has been supplied by unipart. As if I remove housing etc & find this is wrong I'm not going to be a happy chap:

The thermostat on a TD5 is the white-ish looking thing in the picture - it comes as a complete entity.

This is what you use to easily work with spring loaded hose clips:

Yes xat44... generally share your view, no point in getting the sporty tool, I'm no pro, this is a one time thing, and so on... but having to contend with these clips turned into a regular chore, and eventually the cursing, bruising, picking up tools from the floor & all around wasting time & patience stopped being amusing.

I must say that I didn't have too much of a problem with those spring clips in fact whilst working on a mates TD5 I began to actually like them.

I used an adjustable pipe spanner like this:

Irwin Adjustable Vise Grip GrooveLock 6"150mm Brand New on eBay (end time 18-Dec-10 19:18:59 GMT)

and found it to be the right tool for the job.

Sometimes specialist tools are justifiable, like my viscous fan set, but in general specialist tools are just sooooooooooh expensive to buy, that it's not feasable.

On my 1990 Ninety I used to change the thermostat when the weather changed between summer/winter/summer.

Now I have the Disco 2 the heating seems to take a hell of a long time to kick in - is there a winter thermostat and a summer one as per the old Landy?

No, it's not the same set-up at all on the TD5. In fact changing the thermostat assembly is a fair bit more complicated.

Whip the viscous fan off as others have said and leave it in the boot 'just in case'.
