Discovery dipped lights will not switch off. Help please.

Hi.
I went out in my 1995 2ltr tdi discovery today and all was fine, i came back home and switched the lights off but the dipped headlights stayed on, So out i got and checked the back lights and they had switched off fine, the dash lights switched off fine but the main beam stayed on.
It was late so i had to take the fuses out to get the lights to switch off otherwise the battery would have been flat by the morning.
Has anyone else had this problem? or can anyone else give me any advice on what the problem could be and how to fix it if possible please.

Sounds like a problem with the switch stalk.

Yes it has to be the stalk there's nothing else. Pull the stalk connector and the lamp will go out, so confirming a fault with the stalk

A stuck RELAY

There will be one relay that does those lights, and the thing is STUCK ON.

Find it and replace it. Job Done.

where you been hiding charlesy not seen you on here for a while?

I can only see one black relay to the left of the fuse box, and to the right of the steering coloum as viewing when sitting in the discovery. I have unplugged that but still the lights stay on.
Can anyone tell me if there is Any other relays hidden away before i start taking more of the discovery dash apart lol.

Just had a look on rave and in the electrical section it says the following;

Dim/Dip Relay (K176) Behind LH Side of Facia on Bracket
Dim/Dip Resistor (K175) LH Rear of Engine Compartment

Don't know if this info will help.

There's no relays in a disco1 lighting circuit, the dim-dip is a seperate function and is part of the side light circuit.
If you have the later dim-dip system just pull the plug from the resistor to disconnect the system as it not required now, it's located on the engine bulkhead by the washer bottle

If so I'd say dim dip unit, I think it's near the steering wheel on a 200...?

Sorry Discool but original post says 1995 2ltr so i think he has an mpi?

Thanks everyone for ya help on this one
however still having no luck.
I have tryed all the relays i can find but the light is still staying on.
Here are the relays i have took out and tryed.
The big black one bottom right of the steering column.
Brown one just up and behind the fuse box.
Yellow one directly behind the clocks.
3 x Yellow ones to the right of the throttle pedal behind the plastic cover.
Blue on where the 3 yellow ones are.
Thats all i can seem to find. Unless there is any others that are tucked away out of view on the drivers side.

Its got my head farting now

Sorry Discool you were right lol.

So if the after all that the head lamps are still on albit dipped they must be picking up the 12 volts some where, has any additional wiring been added that may be shorting.

With the 200 you have fusable links wraped in the main wiring harnes near the battery these fuses corrode and present some funny electrical faults so worth a look-see

I recently had a 3.5 off roader that was very muddy. I stripped the seats and carpets out and Jetwashed it inside - roof, dash, the lot.

After this, the dipped beam wouldn't turn off, until it dried out.

Didn't work out whether it was switch or dimdip unit, but must have been one of them...

Hi Discool.
I have not added any additional wiring but maybe the former owners have.
I Will have a look see if i can find any fuses in the harnes from the lights.

The rain could have caused an issue so waiting until it stops raining long enough for everywhere to dry out is another good option for me. Thanks
