A mate of mine got his engine control ECU wet at tong today, ended up towing it home after we pulled the ECU apart to see one of the chips melted across the board!!
What I wanted to know is can he buy any TD5 ECU off eBay as there are plenty. The part number on his is NNN000130 there is also another code on there which is A0016 it's an '02 D2 auto td5. From what I could work out some are re-flashable and some are not but I don't think he'd be bothered about being able to re program it for power. So can he buy one of the cheaper ones then just pay someone to re code it for his motor?
Thanks

The NNNxxxxxx ECM's are all flashable, the thing is that u can-t replace a NNNxxxxxx ECM with a MSBxxxxxx(cheaper one) cos MSB are older unflashable units and the only way to make it work is to put the same type or newer ECM... so, your friend needs a same NNN000130 or a NNN500030 newer ECM(AFAIK there is no other alternative).... a tester will be needed to override the immobiliser and save the injector codes in the replacement ECM.

OK thanks for the reply pal, so I can presume that the one he's looking at on eBay which is NNN000120 is adequate replacement for his NNN000130? As far as the coding goes yes im aware of that and think we have someone lined up to do that for £50 apparently.
Thanks

NOOOOO!!! .... i quote myself: "your friend needs a same NNN000130 or a NNN500030 newer ECM(AFAIK there is no other alternative)...."

NNN000120 is for manual not for auto and u can't use one for another

here is the list with the part numbers in chronological order, the u can see that the only two adequate variants are those two i highlighted cos the others are for manual or auto and older units which will not work:

MSB101183 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, MANUAL TRANSMISSION
MSB101184 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, MANUAL TRANSMISSION
MSB101330 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, MANUAL TRANSMISSION
NNN000120 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, MANUAL TRANSMISSION
NNN500020 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, COOLED EGR, CHECK FOR SERVICE EXCHANGE VERSION, MANUAL TRANSMISSION
LR006328 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, EXCHANGE PART (RE-MANUFACTURED), COOLED EGR, MANUAL TRANSMISSION
NNN500250 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, NON COOLED EGR, MANUAL TRANSMISSION
MSB101192 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(+)"EUROPE/J"'
MSB101193 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(+)"EUROPE/J"'
MSB101340 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(+)"EUROPE/J"'
NNN000130 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(+)"EUROPE/J"'
NNN500030 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(+)"EUROPE/J"'
...or this might be good but i'm not 100% certain: LR006301 1 ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ENGINE, EXCHANGE PART (RE-MANUFACTURED), REAR, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, '(+)"EUROPE/J"'

there are other MSB part numbers too but those are irrelevant in this case

OK cheers mate, ordered the later one the NNN5000030 one for £199.99 off eBay
Thanks for that
Dont suppose anyone on here knows of any places to get it coded to vehicle in the North West near Manchester or any ideas on what sort of money this costs?

at the dealers would be quite expensive...search here www.discovery2.co.uk/ Nanocom Locator, get help from your Land Rover Buddies!!! , or a more detailed list http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f50/map-nanocom-hawkeye-locator-140514.html if u can get near a nanocom or hawkeye it's a DIY kind of job to programm the new ECM ... don't forget to read and write on a piece of paper the injector codes from the old ECM to know them for the new one...if it's as badly damaged to not comunicate with the tester u will have to remove the rocker cover and read the codes from the injectors. The car must start with the new ECM after the immobiliser was "sync'd" but it might run like sh*t without injectors coded
