Discovery 200 tdi -Smoking From Oil filler Cap

Hi, looking for some advice. Just bought a Land Rover Discovery 200 tdi (L Reg). Its on 120,000 one owner from new with stacks of history and one of the cleanest discoverys I have seen!

The problem happened when driving it 70mph and noticed smoke from coming under the bonnet (Smoke not Steam). I pulled over and noticed oil coming from the rocker cover. After topping up the oil to get me home, LOTS of smoke chuggs out of the oil filler cap in pattern with the engine idiling. There is no loss of power, but lots of oil loss!

Anyone expericenced any simular problems, or any ideas what i can check?

1st thought is to get it pressure tested?

When this happened to me (on a Bedford CA) the bores had worn oval. Suspect your bores or rings, coz something is pressurising your sump.
 
could it not have a blocked breather or even overfilled with oil? i would have thought that anything that is worn to do with pistons or bores would affect the performance or cause starting issues.does it not throw any blue smoke out of the exhaust?
 
Thanks for quick replies, i thought worn rings etc would casue loss in performance!?? And it barely smokes!


What pipes should i check?
Any other ideas?

there is a breather filter on the rear right hand corner of the rocker cover that is black in colour and has a pipe connected to it. you can clean it out with paraffin but make sure it is thoroughly dry before you refit it.check all the pipework to and from this filter for blockages or crud that may restrict the breathing.it doesnt sound like your engines knackered but just bunged up!
 
Had a mechanic to have a quick look at the engine and without stripping it apart he seems to think its the valves and they might be worn???

Im not sure about this whats your opinoins??

Could be - anything that lets the pressure sidle out of the combustion chamber where it belongs.
