HI guys looking for a quick answer on how hard should a td5 top hose get under normal running
It's not overheating or spitting water out the header nor is it losing water but to me it does feel a little hard on the hoses
Question is what is the normal

I don't know if there is a definitive hardness to the top hose, it can depend on a bit more than just the pressure in the cooling system. I suppose I would just describe it as "firm".
If you're not losing coolant and it's not overheating, then I'd say you have little to worry about but if you really are vexed about the pressure, then replacement expansion caps are pretty cheap.
 
When the HG is going the pipes are solid, otherwise they are able to be squeezed and will deform easily.
Do a simple comparison with any other car, that should tell you. Just don't compare with a LR.

It's squishy when cold and gets firm to hard when hot,
The heater blows hot enough to be uncomfortable if you hold your hand over it for a few min
Not losing water and not venting out of the header and once cooled down it does not hold any pressure I. E it goes squishy again and I changed the waterpump last week as it was leaking.
Just appeared to be a bit firmer when compared to the wife's kia sportage
I took it on a 100 mile run the other day and at 50 miles I stopped and checked it and it was firm to hard
So I released the pressure and completed the last 50 mile and checked it again and it was soft and squishy.
It stood for two days and on the return journey I did the full 100 mile no stopping and checked when I got home and it was firm to hard again so I'm non the wiser to be honest.
Is the hg on its way out or is it the standard pressure and how it runs I'm unsure.

I hope the tank's cap is tightened to maximum allowed and if it's old better replace it with a new genuine one to be ruled out
 
The cap has a pressure control valve in it which must work well at 1.4 bar and if it's not tigthened to maximum the oring can block the bleed hole then pressure builds up in the system ... it was mentioned by @brian47 too in the second post and he also knows why
 
What will that show up?
There is nothing passing the cap as far as I can tell?
If you are worried at all just call in at your local garage and they should have something to test the coolant with and tell you if you have any issues.
It doesn't sound like it if you aren't losing fluid and believe me the top hose does get very hard if you are starting to have issues.
 
Ahh ok this is a new to me motor the bleed hole had been blocked by a bolt where should this pipe go to

Don't have that on mine, just an inlet from the radiator and a bow off from the cap, both attaching to the top of the expansion tank.
Is that you blow off in the background coming from below the cap and going to air?
Mine clips into the bracket that the sealed one in the picture is connected to.
Can you trace the feed from the radiator?
 
Yeah the top bleed from the rad is there I'm thinking this could be for the egr which had been removed by the previous owner anyone know what and where this goes

Actually that may be a V8 header tank. I think they have a pipe that comes from the throttle body and connects there.
 
If you do decide to replace the expansion cap anyway, they're cheap enough, you'll find two "O" rings on it. The first bottom ring seals the cap so that any excess pressure is vented through the cap and into the blow-off and the second ring seals the cap so that (in theory) nothing is blown out from under the cap all over the top of the expansion tank.
I found that when I replaced mine the "O" rings stuck in the neck of the tank which meant that I had to carefully lever it out. I replaced the cap with another, but that time I wiped the merest hint of silicone grease on both of the "O" rings to prevent them from sticking in future. I've had no trouble since then.
