Hi has anyone bought and fitted a td5 plug and play power box/chip are they any good as opposed to a full remap what are the pros and cons ive seen a power box on flea bay at £89 plus postage and a remap is about £250 what is the difference between them apart from the cost a being able to remove to another car
cheers Ian

Hi Ian, Did the same thing about 18 months ago. I was going to go down the re-map route but came across a Steinbauer P-Box piece of kit on FleaBay for £67. Compared to the £5 - 600 new I couldn't resist it. I've been very pleased. Just one thing to note, most tuning boxes just increase the fuelling time for any given engine map. Steinbauer are a little more sophisticated in that they monitor the accelerator position and can tell whether you are putting your foot down gently or flooring it. Believe me if you do put your foot down it really flies. Hope this helps.

Kind Regards

If u are in UK u have access to professional remap so don't mess with tuning boxes even if it's cheaper.... the remap is the best thing u can do.

plug and play box's are not as good, a remap will be set up for your vehicle. Do a search so many on here about it. Had a new chip and remap on my td5 90 by dynachip £250 the lot he comes to you and runs a diagnostic and then sets it up. I is well pleased with the results.

Completely agree with above. Mike is a number 1 guy. Transformed my Discovery TD5. Explains everything he's doing then stays with you while you test drive in your own time to make sure you're happy with the changes.
Tell him what you're looking for, performance, towing, economy he'll sort it.

i had mine done by a guy in york, he'll take ecu out and solder in a new chip to enable him to remap it while you wait, when i got my done it was £150 all in and made a massive difference.

IMHO power-boxes are a recipe for warped exhaust manifolds.
The TD5, being a BMW engine, is very prone to this.
Re-map is the way to go.
I’ve had a Dynachip re-map for over 2 yrs & no problems.
You pays your money & takes your choice.

De-EGR is dead easy, but you probably won’t notice any difference.
It’s worth doing though, as the engine will breathe unpolluted air.

td5 aint a bmw engine, it was developed by LR before bmw took charge and was so far down the development route that it was not finiancially viable to alter it

Thank god that BMW allowed LR to finish developing the TD5 engine, and fitting it to the Defender and Discovery2, otherwise, we all could have had that awfull thing they put in the P38 !!.

I've got a Td5 disco, EGR removed, decat pipe, centre box removed, k&n filter and a tunit. It goes well and sounds great. It's even a bit better on fuel. My manifold is fine, but it is land rover not BMW ;)
