Hi guys my discovery 2 ive bought with a geniune 2 owners from new with 88k on the clock and full history.
Starts great but running poorly on 4 clyinders .with blue swirly smoke and if left turns to more off a white colour .theres no nasty noises
.im fearing the worst cracked head or headgasket
Surely is this normal for the milage
Ive noticed .its just been fully serviced last month from dealers
And isnt over heating or loseing water .oil is clean and havent noticed it raiseing up the dipstick .
Looking back threw service history it had injector seals done back in 2001 .
Any further advise this is the 16p engine
And id say low milage considering ..is this normal .ill plug fault code in to possibly check injectors what figure should these read (green top injectors )

disconnect the plug from the ecu and see if oil is there, if so, it may well be injector wiring loom.just worth a look before you get involved with other stuff.

Surely if it was loom would it cause amount of smoke and missing would it .on one clyinder ? Ill replace loom for piece of mind ..and plug in report back..
 
check / replace or rule out the cheaper easier options first, as said check red plug on ecu for oil and the plug on the head its self. also get the fault codes read. try running it with the air flow meter unplugged see if that changes things.
 
Thing is is this normal for 88k td5 ?
Just plugging in what sure injectors read guys

+4-4 is good anything above + - 10 is bad
it is possible for the conections on the injector harrness to slip back giving rough running check this before replacing harrness
red plug on ecu might have trace of oil in it can also cause missfire aswell as the other end of the loom at head side can of brake or electrical cleaner works well it is also possible injector seal on its way out
 
Sorry,but injection compensation values on TD5's are not always an accurate guide.Before anything else is done,have an electronic compression test carried out with an oscilliscope.Then you will know if you have 5 equal cylinders worth of compression.Have done this loads of times for my own customers and for others garages who have fitted new injectors and the problem remains.The compensation values on the BMW TD4/6 engines are a much better guide than the TD5.
My own TD5 suffered a bent rod at 90,000m,just before I bought it - is now fine after a full engine rebuild.....
 
Right guys ive unplugged one injector at a time smoke clears on no1 .checked ecu for oil and tested engine loom .its lookibg like injector head or piston .cheers for the above
 
I assumed these are called green tops with the green rings on the injector spring tops.
Removed injector .copper washer looks fine no black spots were its been blowing .cleaned bottom off injector out .no noticeable fine cracks in the chamber .nd wouldassume injectors fireing due to diesal fumes on the rear .
Also are the injectors becasuse the first 2 injectors (were the plug plugs in are both stating no3 the rest dont ( possably assuming its had a injector aready changed ..
Which makes me weary of a piston or con .meationed earlyer .then surely id be getting the diesal in the oil .or dipstick raise ...next thing i reckon is buid it back up and check compression readings threw the heater plugs before i rip the engine apart ...

removed rocker unplugged one injector refit rockercover and start engine .
I noticed that the injector at front unpluged the engine starts and smoke clears
When i did this idea with the rest engine struggled to idiol and smoke came bk hernce why im going for that clyinder not fireing correctly ...sorry if im wrong..was just a basic test idea
 
If you are confident that its cyl 1 that is not making progress then a compression test throught the glow plug holes might work well enough to give you a good answer.Remember there is no plug in cyl 5.
Also,read and re-read the proceedure in the Rave info or off the Topix website BEFORE you take the head off.Its not a difficult job,but will save alot of hassle if you do it the right way.
BTW Sierraferry,its not much trouble to remove the cam cover and unplug one injector at a time.Laying the cover back on before starting the engine is a good idea as they throw LOTS of oil around.It does not hurt the ECU either.
 
As you've gone to the trouble of removing he rocker cover, whilst it's off make sure the lobe on the camshaft for the injectors haven't worn at all. You'll have to look very closely
 
Cam looks mint .no signs or marks or worn lobs ...or tigh rub marks .
Glow plug compression test next then ..cheers bud .then head off .knew it wouldnt be simple its a td5 lol

thanks ... i was hoping you found a easyer way:)... albeit it's possible, and after that the ECU is protected from oil ingress in the future: cut the 5 yellow wire near the red plug and fit bullet connectors on them, this way you can unplug them one by one and if oil comes down through the loom again the oil will leave at the bullet connector end never reach the ECU...i would have told you that before if i knew what are you up to do ;)
