After about 30 miles, the gearbox is feeling very tight in all gears, no other issues at all. Can I ask what experiences you guys have had, and with which gearbox oil, should I also use any additives to the gearbox oil. Thanks/pete.

Texaco MTF94 is the "correct" LR oil to use in the D2 manual box.
Personally, I would just get a cheaper version that meets the correct spec ;)

Hi Pete, It could be oil but it could also be the plastic collar at the base of the gear lever, which swells when warm and baulks gear selection.

The part I'm talking about is no.9 in the attached parts diag.

Any MTF 94 will work with the R380... BUT if you can afford go for the genuine stuff cos it works better than the replacements... R380 is the most "squeamish" gearbox i met in my life when it comes to oils, i've replaced the oil 6 times in one year and the genuine Rover MTF 94 was the best by far than other MTF94s or alternatives, there were so called "alternatives" recommended by so called "specialists" made by Castrol which i replaced after 1 week cos i struggled to select 1'st and 2'nd even when it was not cold... though i ended up with Difflock Evolution gear oil which is even better, i can change gears with two fingers even a -25*C with it... not cheap but for me it worths every penny of it, maybe in UK climate is not so important

That Difflock EVO oil is very good, I put some in my first TDi 200 and it ran like silk afterwards.

Thanks to you all, I will go for the MTF94 and see how it goes, I will also check the plastic coller to ensure it is in good condition. Thanks for all the advice guys. Pete.

Finally got my gearbox oil changed. The stuff that came out was brown like mud and not very nice. In went the landrover mtf94 and what a difference. No more notchy, grinding changes. I have just taken it for a Short run but it feels so much smoother and easier to move the gears on the change. What a pleasure. Can't wait to get the transfer box and axles done now!
