When towing my horsebox today the temperature light for the gearbox came on. I carried on my journey and it was fine. Came to drive it home tonight and the light didn't come on at all. I need to collect my horsebox - with horse tomorrow. Is it safe to use? Dont want to kill the gearbox it cost me 3k to replace it last time.

yes its not uncommon on a hot day with hard work like towing, an oil change might be a good idea ,4.5 litres of dexron 3

Cheers James will get the local garage on to it on Monday - someone told me that I needed to drive over 50mph to keep the box cool.. Poor horse would have heart failure

thats true after 50 the torque converter lock ups and so its converting any more just direct drive, before lock up you get less revs from torque converter than engine revs and the difference is heat, which is why autos are more thirsty prior to lock up, but if you keep oil changed regularly like annually box will cope ok with 40

The useless high speed only lockup

I wonder how many boxes it has claimed.

Supposed to be possible to modifiy the loom to activate it manually

if you locked it too early youd put too much torque too sudden through the clutch packs

I know, but if a gearbox remap was possible I would have had one done ages ago

I would remove cold start lock up delay
Lower lock up top by 3 or 4 mph

It would save me a fortune.

Would be worth checking the radiator area of the grille where the transmission oil cooler lives isn't clogged up with crap and giving it a clean some compressed air from the back can eject a surprising amount of crud that's not readily visible. Also if it's got any driving lamps or other paraphernalia on the front would be worth considering removing.

Also be wary of the hose to the cooler going it's quite common for them to go anyway but running hot will encourage it they generally burst the metal crimp off. You can pre-empt it by carefully cutting the crimp off and replacing with two genuine jubilee branded hose clips - or other good ones but not unknown cheap ebay/pound shop junk.

Keeping the auto in 3rd position is used a lot in caravanning circles.
I would think if you are only doing about 40 this would help.
Also stops hunting up and down in certain conditions

Could just also be the oil temp sensor, my light started coming on every time i towed , slowly got worse. Changed it not been on since .cheap part to replace and fixed it . Its a little bit of a squeeze to get to but a easy home job to do

Hi James just had a call from the garage - they have changed the oil and filter but are now saying they cant get it to go into 4th? or 3 and a half as they put it. They say its doing 3000 in third and then not changing?? Really confused if I am honest I rarely do over 50 in it - we live in Lincolnshire and the roads are like death traps with all the 'speed numptys' The guy at the garage says he has no idea why - the gearbox was replaced about 8 years ago.
