Hello All

I am in the process of replacing my rotary coupler behind the steering wheel.

I did read somewhere that you have to be extra careful with the removal of the unit.

The good new is though is that my 1997 Disco does not have airbags, just the cruise control.

So I ask first can a rotary coupler with all the airbag connections be used on the non airbag disco, as these are more widely available for some reason.

And two does anyone know how difficult the actual job is.

Any thought would be appreciated.

Nigel

Why? If it's to fix the non-cancelling indicators have a look on ebay for a replacement part .. aluminium and way better than standard .. I just fitted one!

Well, I made my own, but it'd be easier from ebay .. ;)

Ah, sorry can't help, mine doesn't have CC ..

Hi there Nigel, replacing the rotary coupler is a dead straightforward job, especially as you don't have a steering wheel airbag.

You don't say what year your vehicle is, but you might like to know the part you need was fitted to later TDi 300's AND TD5's, so that opens up the market market for finding one 2nd hand, which is what I did when I replaced the broken one on my wife's TDi 300.

I did it because the horn wasn't working, but essentially the reasons don't matter too much.

First thing is to remove the steering column covers. Once they are away start on the non-airbag steering wheel. Ensure the wheels are facing perfectly ahead. Remove the centre cover and you will find a large nut - undo it and set aside. Now you may be lucky and the wheel comes straight off, but normally they need to be wiggled & tugged (fnar fnar) firmly to remove them.

Now you will have access to the existing coupler. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the coupler. Note carefully how the locating pins fit into the steering boss and the back of the steering wheel.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT ANY COUPLER YOU BUY IS LOCKED IN PLACE WITH TAPE, OTHERWISE IT COULD GET or have been DAMAGED;

Now install the new coupler, locating the pins correctly; re-install the steering wheel noting the pin locations. Re-connect the electricals. Install the retaining nut, replace the cover and Bob is your mums' best friend.

If it's the CC you're trying to fix, you are completely sure it's the coupler at fault are you? The reason I ask is that on D1's the usual cause is a fault in the vacuum pipes??????

Good luck

Dave

On a D2, the steering wheel controls take their power from the horn feed. I don't know if a D1 is the same. When I activated the cruise control on mine, it didn't work at first because the horn fuse had blown.

cheers!

as the Big lad suggested, double check all your hoses first. There have been other people with CC problems and almost always it comes down to hoses.I had this problem. control switch working but nothing working fron steering wheel switch. Piece of hose replaced and has now been working OK for 7 years.

cheers

Little bit of good news, coupler is ok and was hose needed replacing.

But the cable from the accerlator needs to be pressed a few times lightly for the cruise control switch to work. Seems to be seized so sprayed some wd40 for now down the cable to try and help it a bit.
