Hello again

my 1996 300tdi disco is causing me a bit of trouble again hope one or two of you may have some idea's

when traveling at low speed i.e. first gear in a que of traffic the car feels like its jumping sideways across the road. most of the movment feels to be at the rear. when I increase speed this problem disappears and she drives fine at high speed like on the motorway. The wife discribes this as if I driving on a square egg (she has a lovely way with words). also when stood and ready to move off she can be very difficult to steer to the right but turns left no problem but this dosn't happen all the time.

n e ideas on what these two things could be or are they related all help will be much appricated ta.

Check your tyres,it looks as though you have a bulge on the tread.

I had one of those on my Disco quite recently, and the strange thing was that I didn't notice anything wrong at all until when someone else was driving on a little twisty wet road he very nearly lost it BIG TIME .

Because my TD5 Disco has ACE cornering doo-dah, soft tyres and so on tend to be compensated for by the ACE system, so you don't get the same feel.

We finished the journey (another 140 miles) and the next day I noticed the back right tyre looked soft. It was under 20 psi, so I jacked it up and sprayed soapy water at it to see where it was leaking. It didn't take long to find, and I have shipped up a photo of the tread area. The tyre had bulged God knows how long ago, because of tread ply cord failure, and the tread was worn clean away then through the casing and then through the STEEL radial belt cords and then through the INNER rubber lining till it was leaking air.

I cut a 12" gash in the tyre wall there and then to be sure no-one ever uses that tyre again. The rest of the tyre measures 5 - 6 mm of tread all over - but the bulged area was completely worn away.

The photo is worth seeing as an example of tread ply damage probably due to driving over a small hard tree stump or something like that. And I repeat, I must have driven hundreds or even thousands of miles and didn't notice a damn thing wrong - and I have a very twitchy bum!

Taught me a lesson - keep checking those treads.

Well yesturday had the shed down to local kwik ripoff and had all tyres checked all seem to be ok apart from rear n/s needs replacing soon due to a lack of hair but apart from that all seemed in order with tyre's so got home and desisded to chack all steering componets and swivels and bush etc and did same on rear and though while I was under there I would change all the diff oils and transfer box and gear box oil oh and grease the joints on the prop. all done and took it for a test drive. got to bottom of the hill and there's a big wide open crossroads thats very quiet at that time of day so desided to go round and round in circles on full lock just to see if owt happened. well it did as I go round the car feel's like the front end is trying to pull her self round while the inside wheel on the rear keeps doing little spins so I think the shed may just be stuck in diff lock.

if this is the case should the light on the dash be on as I know the light does work and could this cause the wobble due to the transmisson windup?

plus can I take the transfer box out of the car without having to drop the whole transmission assembly?

Jack up any front wheel, or better, both frint wheels.
Get in car, start engine.

Engage 1st gear and VERY GENTLY ease up the clutch a little.

If car tries to drive off the jack DIP THE CLUTCH, engage neutral, stop engine.

It seems to be in 4WD.

Thankyou very much kind sir you have just save me a ton of work I owe you 3 pints if we ever meet. it was stuck in diff lock / 4wd it appears that the linkage between landrovers idea of a transfer lever and the diff lock bit is mis shapen and is applying a little pressure and pushing it across torwards diff lock while driving so gonna mess about with that bit from above and see if I can get it not to do it then hopefully evething should be fine

and as I say thankyou again I will let you know if I have sucksess.

Hmmm..... posting three pints of beer ... TNT ?

I think you can poke at the links fron the top but getting access is a bummer from above.

If you can get it up on a ramp that's better and you can clean it waggle it and oil it after bashing it all with a modest hammer.

After that USE IT! I throw the Disco into low range several times a week. The crap doesn't get time to set on the linkages.
