Hi guys
Disco 2 TD5 Automatic - 1999 129k miles.
 Getting vibration from 'down below' when under load (accelerating or going uphill) in fourth gear between 60 and 70mph. Kick down to third it disappears, take foot off gas it disappears, drive through it to over 70 it disappears.
Vibration resembles the 'brrrrr' wheel noise when going over the nearside white line on motorways.
Any ideas? Ta

Tyre balance, UJ's, wheel bearings .. all known to produce similar noises at similar speeds.

Bit of addtional info following 'road test' today. Only appears to happen on flat-surfaced roads i.e. motorways. On your average A road (rough tarmac and patches) nothing...

Mine does the same I've pinned it down to rear prop shaft

Lol My 300tdi does the same on the motorway! It seems to do it most on the on ramps but starting to do it on the motorway too... Think it may be time to get under it and have a look!

D2, it would be highly advisable to check and double check the "hookes joint" (double UJ) on the front propshaft. A VERY common failure point, and if it goes whilst your moving at speed, it can, and will smash a hole in your autobox and the bill will be significantly bigger...................dont delay on fixing it !!!

To confirm it is the front prop, remove it, lock the CDL in the transfer case with a 10mm spanner on the difflock shaft, and take it for a spin in 2wd, there is no problem with speed, just get it there "gently".

If theres no vibe, then the front shaft is shot and will need either replacing or rebuilding.

Still getting the problem chaps and chapesses. I've had the propshafts checked - garage says nowt wrong. They also claim to have checjked wheels (bearings, balancing) also clean bill of health. I'm stumped.

I had exactly the same symptoms and it was resolved in stages:

Stage 1 - replace the rubber doughnut - a bit better:D
Stage 2 - rebalance all the wheels - a lot better:D:D

All is bliss now.

Hi, mine had exactly same problem, mines a manual, i recently had clutch changed and the vibration thing was next on list, but while under there i changed rear prop donut, but the old one ok but tired, but the dual mass flywheel had 30mm play side to side , and the spigot bush bearing had to be cut out ! so i guessing this amount of play in flywheel magnified through the props gives u the under load vibration, but worth doing donut (15 quid) as first call of elimination, mine drives fine now hope this helps
