Hi Guys!

I'm from the gaylander section but not for long

I hope.... :D

I'm considering trading in the gaylander on a disco TD5 and I'm hopeing you guys can give me some advice.
I did read through a few threads before starting this one but none seemed to answer my questions completely.

Question is this: Is the TD5 a good motor(enjine)?
Should I get a Auto or Manual and what's the pro's and cons?
What should I look out for when testdriving etc.
I'm not going to do mods just change the tyres to good all-rounders so I can do the occasional offroad and travel to Namibia ,Mozambique and Botswana.

All coments are welcome! (I'm thick skinned ;))

Early ones had oil pump probs. Tend to suffer from fuel leaking into oil and hgf probs, so i believe- but they go like stink. Ratty is yo man to ask.

Hi MHM

Thanks for the reply, it's good to year from you again.
It's been a while since I've been on LoonyZone :)
Do you know from which year moddel has TD5's?

Hi Chris2,
I've got a TD5 Auto 2000my with 215,000km on the clock. Would only recommend Auto, it's great to drive. Make sure it's been properly serviced, nice and clean etc (no oil leaks....ha,ha,ha). Look out for tell tale signs of Head Gasket troubles (oil in water etc).
I've done head gasket (cause the radiator was leaking and the previous owner let her overheat), Radiator, PAS pipes, Injector harness, tensioner pulley, Viscous fan bearing and Crankshaft pulley. Fitted Cruise control (dead easy on TD5 Disco). She does 10km/l and I wouldn't swap her at all.
I've found British 4x4 good for spares but crap for servicing. Now use Independant 4x4 who have been very helpful.
Like most TD5 Disco's, they need TLC and a large wallet but a great vehl.

Hi Paul

I'm going to have a look at this one this weekend (The km are putting me off a bit, ok alot!) but will go and have a look anyway.

Cars4sale - Dealer Link Detail

I've never owned a Auto so will take some getting use to.
If you need some parts and you are a bit of a DIY guy I would recomend Dover Parts in JHB (011 493 6717) they are only open during the week but they are the suppliers for British4x4 and Independent (as far as I know :))

As for the large wallet and TLC that's probably the only thing that's the same as a Freelander!

Hi there, I have a TD5 and a TDi 300 and I can tell you that the TD5 is a much more refined vehicle, the TD5 engine being smoother and more powerful than the previous model TDi300.

But, and this is a very big but, they do need very knowledgable and well equipped people to look after them. There are loads of ECU's that talk to each other on the car and you need a computer terminal device to diagnose problems.

I have in the past done all my own servicing on Land Rovers but this car is different, so different that I am going to sell it and go back to TDi 300 !!!

When TD5's are running properly they are great, but they are expensive and difficult to diagnose and repair, imo.

Thanks Big guy

I would have considered the TDi300 but they were never imported to South Africa (Well I can't find any :()

Please feel free anyone to correct me on this if I'm wrong.

Hi, I have a 99 TD5 ES. Best car ever owned. Carries whatever I want plus more. Yes expensive to repair, but great to drive. If the money allows me, will keep for a long time. Pay to get a good one though!!!

Hi i,ve got a 2002 Td5 Es 50'000 on the clock had it since january. So far its had a new steering box (it dumped all the power steering fluid on the floor), and a new fuel pressure regulator (****ing diesel out on to the gear box) A new ecu for the mirrors ( wouldn't fold in or out), All done under warenty thank god!!! but about £800 So choose very carefully!!! or make sure you get a good warenty!!! having said all that wouldn't trade it for anything!!!!!

Mine's a 2000 TD5 GS auto bought 15 months ago. 64,000 miles - now 75,000. Had never had an auto before this in 30 years of driving but very easy to get used to it and I can't see me going back now. Lovely cruiser on motorways and fine round town. Had the injector loom and pressure regulator done under warranty, and yes, the sunroof does leak. I wouldn't mind but I looked for evidence before I bought it and there was none. Probably shouldn't have ever checked that they opened - a job for the summer.

Hi there. I have a 2002 td5 manual and its great. It had 93k miles on the clock when i got it 2 years ago with a full history, it now has 120k miles and i do all my own servicing and repairs. I put a clutch kit and flywheel in as the dual mass flywheel started knocking just after buying it and then a couple of months ago a fuel pump and then injector washers, o rings and harness as it was a swine to start although i probably did not need a fuel pump as that made no difference. Just routine servicing otherwise and getting about 30 to the gallon (although this has dropped to about 25 since doing the injectors so a phone call to td5 alive may be in order) I had a 200tdi for 4 years before this and this is totally different, more relaxed to drive, quiet ,you can actually hold a conversation at 70mph and it tows my caravan and 3 1/2 ton ifor williams no probs. :blabla:As for the electronics they are very reliable these days, get yourself a nanocom or similar ( i have a snap tester which works good) and should you keep it for a while it will pay for itself in code reading alone. ( i think a lot of people scare themselves with "problems" as you only check the forums for problems and there seems to be a lot of them on here, how many times do people go onto forums to see the positive side of ownership) any way i would highly recommend the td5 disco, mines staying with me for a while yet, Good luck with your search.:)

Hi Guys

I went to test-drive another one this weekend.
It's a 1999 Disco2 Auto 7seater with all the bells and whistles.
It is in a very very good condition and the motor is immaculate.
The motor and Turbo has recently been redone.
I already have a buyer for my gaylander so I will be one of the disco boy's very soon :D

I can't wait!
The perfect balance between luxury and off-road capability...

I have a 51 plate TD5 ES manual (7 Seater) and I love it. The value of it has completely dropped (which would be very annoying if I wanted to sell it!!) but does mean you should be able to pick up a bargain!!

I bought it nearly 3 years ago with 60,000 miles on the clock, it now has 80,000 and I have encountered the following problems....

Air suspension dropping when engine switched off = new air bags,
fuel leak and 'hesitating' over 2500rpm= new fuel regulator thingy,
constant battle to get rear seats (seats 6 & 7) to upright position = frustrated owner!,
just noticed water leaking on inside of rear door seal = god knows??!!
and ever since I bought it, the clutch has made a TERRIBLE whining noise when cold, apparently it's the release bearing, I think i'll wait and see what happens to that!!
It began to hesitate again recently but was told to spray electrical contact cleaner on the air sensor, which I did and it solved the problem. However I did notice the bottom of the air intake pipe (engine side of the sensor) had a thick coating of oil on it/in it = again, god knows but wouldn't have thought there should be engine oil in the air system!!

Other than that, it's comfortable, fully loaded, has reasonable MPG for its size and weight (average of 30), I think it looks great (clean or dirty), drives very smoothly on-road, is great off-road and has a take-away-hook!!!!

Pick up a bargain and live the dream!!

OIL on the sensor tells me you've not got rid of your EGR there was loads of crap on mine before i got rid of the egr.And the wineing when cold is to do with the duel mass fly wheel mine does it cold then don't here from it till next morning.
