Last weekend I decided to check the oil pump bolt on my 2000 Disco 2 TD5. Dropped the sump, and what fun that was :(, and replaced the bolt (which wasn't loose as it happened), and came to refit the sump. I managed to break off the bottom of the oil pick up pipe struggling to lift the sump into position so had to get a new one of those. £40 lighter and now need to once again attempt a sump refit. The gasket, which the manual says must be re-fitted dry, does not stay in position when lifting the sump up despite the locating lugs, and is a right royal PITA.

Does anyone have any advice on easy ways to refit the sump keeping the gasket in position, and avoiding collision with the new oil pick up pipe? Would it harm to hold the gasket in place with a small line of non setting gasket goo?

Obviously your not going to, but they're 100x easier with gear box out.

I know what your saying as I used to struggle but you know those locating lugs on the gasket? That sit into the sump, try super gluing them to the sump, works for me

Yes, you're right, I have no intention of removing the gearbox.

I bit the bullet earlier and used some non setting gasket goo on the sump side, removed the steering arm and the front prop to give a bit more room and went for it. It went straight in (well, a bit of wriggling about was needed). The gasket goo held it in place really well (I didn't think about using super glue on the dowels - next time maybe (hopefully not)). Was still putting it back together at 10pm so havent refilled it yet so I dont know how successful it's been. Fingers crossed

its not hard , i glue gasket up with silicone ,let it dry then fit sump

The workshop manual states that the gasket MUST be assembled dry, I believe, and that there are only 3 places where you should put RTV sealant on the block, and re-assemble within 20 minutes. I bow to your far greater knowledge and experience than me on working on these blessed machines, but assume that LR specify the dry fit for a reason? Thinking about it though, I guess the gasket will be dry once the silicone sets ;)
