Hi,

can anyone help me as i'm a bit stuck!!

i have a 1991 discovery and over the last 2 months my car has started to shake from side to side when i hit a drain or a bump in the road when driving over 40 MPH, it's worse when cornering. we've replaced track rod ends as they were a litle worn and have checked steering damper but doesnt seem to be that. have also checked all bushes but no joy!!!

the steering wheel shakes quite a lot when it happens and i have to slow right down to stop the front end shaking.

does anyone have any ideas??!!

Try and not drive over bumps:rolleyes: ;) :D Might be yer tyres, power steering belt, steering box. when ye say "checked" do ye mean had a quick look, or taken the parts off and inspected properly?

we just checked them didnt actually take all apart, i will check engine mounts etc

thanks
Might even be time for new bushes if yer landy's that old. Mines is same age and just recently renewed all me original bushes for the polly wotsits, helped a bit but there was other issues which I've hopefully got sorted now;) :D

have checked the bushes on the front and they seem ok, it's only started happening in the last 2 months and was quite scary when it fist happened!! so if it's not the bushes does anyone have any other ideas of what could be causing it?

When you say shakes, do you mean the whole car violently shakes??

My 300 did that at around 60mph, have you checked the preload on the swivels? I'd of thought that the 200 would be the same as 300. I had my swivels reshimmed and sorted, did it abit afterwards but knowwhere near as bad as it was, the rest of the shaking was play in the steering box.

i've just found another person on here from about a month ago with what sounds like the same problem, think i'm gonna replace the steering damper first and take it from there, hopefully that will solve the problem but if anyone else has any other thoughts then please let me know

thanks everyone:)

Good morning all,

I'm wondering if discolady has finally fixed the problem with is rover.

My girlfriend's Disc I 97 has the same issue. Between 80-100kph, the truck is starts shaking like crazy when hitting a bump.

Here's what I've done so far :
- steering damper changer
- steering box rebuilded
- radius arms bushings changed (4)
- panhard bushings changed (2)

Some ppl tell me it's the differentiel, other the swivels or the wheel bearings. Now I'm kinda discourage about this hole thing.

Any help will be appreciated.

My 2004 Series 11 Discovery has started a similar problem. First thought from the garage was the ACE, however this proved not to be the case, having eliminated the steering damper, bearings, etc, suggestions now seem to be pointing to tyres as some owners had reported 'squirrley' handling with original tyres fitted coming towards end of life. At £800 it's fast becoming an expensive trial and error method of fault finding.

Hi everyone,

well i've now replaced steering damper and the track rod end but now think it may be the front shocks so going to fit them soon and we will see!!!

Before you spend any more money check your swivel preload's. Remove each wheel disconect the steering ball joint and drag link ball joint. With the weight off the ground turn each swivel by hand, after you overcome the initial inertia it should be quite firm to turn, not sloppy and not able to fall to left or right on it's own weight. Before anybody says you need a spring balance, yes you do, but you can get a good appreciation of how loose it is without spending more money.

If it is sloppy the problem is definately your swivels. Undo the top two swivel bolts after disconecting the brake pipe clamps pull the pin out of the swivel (it can be tight) remove 1 of the shims and retighten,do both sides the same. Try the swing test again it should now be tighter if not remove another shim and try again. I guarantee that this is your problem.

If you find that there are no shims to remove or you have removed all of them and it is still loose, then it is your swivel bearings. This is a very cheap part to buy for each side, but a bit more difficult to fix but is still a home diy job.

Do not spend any more cash untill you have checked the preloads on your swivels.

recently sorted my steering shake out, having replaced or checked all of the above, i finally put my tracking guages on it and found that i had too much toe in, once adjusted i now have no shake at the steering wheel after going over a bump either mid corner or on a straight.

why do folk do this? chuck money at anything and everything in the vain hope it will fix it.
the idea is that you check various componets till you find the one that is at fault then either fix, adjust or replace that bit , not the whole fooking front end.

tyres are a possibility, the ones i replaced on mine were 8years old. so the misshapping is a possibility, having done the back ones did lessen the vibration but i still need to do the front ones soon if the vehicle has not gone by then.

Sounds like my Disco TD5 51 reg, air suspension, a year or so ago.
My problem was rear height sensor fault, confusing the ACE system.
Body roll became very violent for several seconds, with only the slightest input from steering. Really scary !!!!!
Specialist check using LR computer link-up, should pin point fault quickly, unless it is caused by intemittent sensor / wiring.
