Hi Chaps,

New to the forum and new to the joys of Disco's after driving Jeeps for years!

Bought a 95 300tdi a couple of weeks ago, all was going well....

At the weekend she developed a loud rattle at the front end (99% sure driver side wheel side), almost sounded like a plastic bottle being dragged underneath but only started after being driven for 5 minutes, only happened when going forwards not when staionary or in reverse.

Had the wheel off , pads fine, discs streight but a bit of grind when turning the road wheel... nothing hanging down in the engine bay etc

Drove her the other morning, rattle started then suddenly there was a real grinding through the steering and she veered right towards oncomming traffic!

Gingerly drove her home.... no rattle....

I suspect a wheel bearing went but would that cause the grinding in the steering, veering right but then no problems driving her home...

Any ideas gratefully recieved.

Pete

if you push and pull hard on the top of the wheel (eg12 o'clock) it it moves / clunks, then better get a wheel bearing set. And if its been a while then your in for a long day fixing it as the races will weld them selfs to the stub axle.
Be careful driving on it if its that, you could end up with nothing but your calliper holding the wheel on.
I was following a s3 when the bearing failed, he lost the hub, whee,l drum, the lot, just missed a car.

swivel bearings will start to show up when moving slowly on full lock, sound like you are dragging a chain.

Are there any other faults which could lead to the 'coffee grinder' type noise I should be looking for?
