Hi,

yesterday while bolting on some side steps to my disco II
I noticed a leak in rear axle/right rear wheel area. Being
a complete newbie with my LR and having owned the car for
1,5 months I've got no idea what could be the problem. i'd
appreciate if someone could take a look at the picture and
tell me what could possibly be the cause of the leak:

And I'd also appreciate if you could tell me how deep i'm
gonna have to dig my pockets if the suggested diagnosis
proves to be correct...

I'll take the car to garage asap but that could be a month
away since right now i'm kinda short of cash.

Hi BR !

Not an expert, but looks like the oil seal in the diff, but the thing that
does concern me, is there oil on the brake disk ?

if so be carefull !

re the price poss only a few coppers for the seal, but a arm and a leg for
the labour !!

Steve

AFAIK This could be either the hub o'ring (between the hub & axle tube) £
or the axle oil leaking through the wheel bearing seals, out the hub & onto
the flange which then drips onto the wheel, sometimes contaminating the
brakes which would require a new hub assemb£y ££££. if the oil is on the hub
flange (part with the wheel studs) then it's a hub assembly, wheel bearings
not available separately. ££££
in the meantime check the axle oil, although it doesn't sees to have lost
all that much oil,
could try an o'ring first.

stevie...

Could be a blocked axle breather?
This is usually a plastic tube going up from a fitting on the top of the
axle.
As the axle heats up, air inside expands and needs to vent, if the
breather's blocked then it'll force oil out of somewhere else instead.

Hi,

thanks for suggestions, I'll have a look at the breather tube and
check the the axle oil first...

The brake disk feels dry so this propably won't affect drivability?
And there doesn't seem to be a lot of oil leaking, do you think it's
ok to delay the service for a month? I'll of course keep an eye on
the leak daily and if it seems to get worse, I'll drive to nearest
garage right away.

Are there any service/parts catalogs on the net for disco II? Or
what service manual would you recommend for dII? I have the factory
manual but it seems to be written for more experienced mechanics, I
think i need the "for dummies" edition...

Samppa
