Is there anything special about the fuel filler cap for a disco 300TDi ??

I ask because I lost mine and I've an emergency bung thing on there which I don't think would pass an MOT......and the MOT is up at the end of the month.

What do I need to know before I buy another?

Do want to be conned into buying something really expensive because "you need this exact one because landrovers are special" when a cheap one is as good.

Just read that again and it sounds like a crazy little thing, but I'm not a fan of learning by mistakes - I prefer to get things right the first time :)

As long as the fuel filler flap is locked temporary filler cap is not a failure.

OK - I wasn't sure. I just guessed because I saw some in a shop and the one said "will pass MOT" and the cheaper naffer looking one didn't. Mine like the cheaper one.

So my MOT is OK, but I'd still like a decent one back on there - it was quite nice with the torque thing when you tightened it (assuming it was meant to do that )

I still can't believe I drove off and left the cap on the rear bumper

Just as surprised that when I went back to the garage and asked if they found it, they gave me the temp one !!

The push in type filler cap wont pass MOT, it needs to be the one with the locking disc in the middle. Looks the same as the cheap crappy one except it has a bit that turns to lock it down tight.

ive always been lead to believe the push on are ok as long as the fule filler flap locks as what was mentioned earlier

The idea of a locking cap is not to stop people stealing the fuel but to stop the fuel coming out while cornering. For MOT your fuel cap MUST seal tight. Push in caps dont do this an it's an MOT failure. The slighted more expensive caps with the turn disc in the middle will seal down tight on the filler neck and will pass MOT..........

The original didn't lock, but it did fit with a proper tread rather than just push in.

I think (from the first reply) that as long as something locks it's OK.

The cover locks with the ign key, but the cap never did.

EDIT was typing this as you typed your reply - it makes more sense what you said now..........which makes me still not sure as I don't know either of you, so can't guess whose right ;)

The cap may not have locked ( nor does mine ), but it did screw in to form a tight seal on the top of the neck. A locking fuel flap will not stop fuel spilling out of the neck.

OK so if I need a new cap, back to my original question.....

was there anything special about the original landy cap, or will any generic proper cap do?

And even if it will do, should I still buy a proper landy one?

surely if I leave my fuel flap keys behind when I take it for an mot they can't fail it.. and tbh i wouldn't be overly happy an mot tester hunting through the car for a key anyway.. and it wasn't mentioned or failed last time..

On mine the door key opens the filler flap so if yours dosnt maybe its had a different lock fitted. The fuel tank cap is probably part of the mot so the tester may need access so it could be a fail if he cant test it.

If it was me id try to find a good second hand one or buy a new one from the dealers.

Well I was considering buying one today, but the cost of yours sounds better :D

Can I take you up on that.....then I can save up a while for my own.

Anything you want to borrow in return? I have a house full of CB stuff :D

I have 2 meself.....pity they dont seem to want to work properly when fitted to the motor :D:D

I don't suppose you've got a steering guard you want to lend me as well :D

That's the other thing I may be considering.

Still not sure - I don't really want to mod too much, I just want to be sure I can drive home after.

Diff guard though is a definite - just had a crawl underneath this morning and there are a lot of scrapes on the front diff, and I've only been laning once!!

Well, it's gone in for MOT

The guy that is doing the MOT says "Must be the right sort for the car, not an emergency one."

ie it must lock to the hole properly, not lock for security reasons.

Whichever is right (and I guess there may be room for interpretation) I can't argue with the guy that's actually doing it - especially as I was going to buy a new one anyway.

Fortunately the local spares place I use is also the supplier for the MOT place, so they're doing the MOT knowing the cap will arrive shortly

Now lets hope t doesn't fail on anything else !!!!!!!

(it shouldn't)
