My disco (91 200tdi) has been a brilliant starter requiring just to turn the key to literally just flick the starter and she fired into life no bother, having just clocked 227000 two days ago it has also was the beginning of a little foible. Now it's taking a second or two of turning over even when hot and only being switched off a minute or two before hand and when it does start it idles very slowly then after a couple of seconds picks up onto normal idle. At first I thought fuel filter but checked that and the sediment bowl underneath nothing wrong there checked oil and water for cross contamination and water loss in case it was the head gasket knackerd but all appears fine. Drives as normal just slightly worried as it has just started happening suddenly just wondering if anyone else has experianced this?? I'm thinking possible fuel pump or injector fault now as been through most other things on it any ideas?

sounds like air getting into the fuel. First port of call would be to check the leak off pipes on the injectors.

Had this problem caused by a worn keyway on the crankshaft pulley, allowing the fuel injector timing to go out. When it did start I got a lot of white (cold diesel) smoke as well. Probably not your problem, but it could be! (Problem solved by welding the pulley on. Crude but it worked).

hiya mate, i had the exact same problem a few weeks ago. checked everthing changed sender unit and everything, then thought id silicon the top metal hoses ontop of the sediementer. started 1st click of the key. better than ever, so now ive bypassed the sedimenter. easy way out ;-)

did you undo the plastic thumb screw on the bottom of the fuel filter? these can leak if tampered with and cause air to be drawn into the fuel system causing bad starting and irratic running.
... well worth a check.

i had this a while ago, i turned out to be the metal pipes on the top of the sedimenter, one of which had a small crack in it, the mechanic only found it by pressurising the fuel system somehow, he said he could just see a fine mist of fuel coming out of it, replaced the sedimenter and it starts just the same as ever
