Hey hey,

I bought a discovery! Decided to abandon my pickiness and just bought something cheap that I won't mind throwing around a field. Ended up with a 1995 Disco 300TDi with 153k on the clock. No mods (except for the stupid bubbled DIY privacy glass that only acts to constrict visability!). Engine and gearbox both seem very strong. Horrible grinding noise on full lock - seems to be coming from a dodgy bearing so hopefully that won't cost too much to fix. 10 months MOT and a few months tax. It's in need of a good tidy up but runs fine - £825.

So... I was desperate to try some light off-road stuff (I knew it wouldn't handle anything too heavy on road tyres). As I live (very) rurally there was no shortage of little lanes to explore - went up and down gravel/dirt tracks, found some rough grass to spin about on, a few minor inclines and even drove across a shallow river - all great fun and the Disco didn't miss a beat.

Coming home about to park up, I noticed the bit of disused wasteground in the field next to my house. "Looks like fun". Yeah, turns out that it was boggy, and the Disco sank like a ****ing stone. My inexperience, the lack of something big enough to tow me out, and the lack of mud tyres meant that it's still stuck out there as I type this from bed!

So, couple of questions...

1. Would mud tyres have made a big difference, or are bogs a no-no?
2. Will it sink overnight
3. In my vein attempt to free myself I thought I'd engage the Diff Lock as a wheel was spinning furiously whenever I tried to jerk myself loose. (Already in low box - how savvy!). The transfer box was stiff going from Hi to Lo but it did loosen off and now goes between them without too much difficulty - but I don't know what's happening with the Diff Lock. I've used quite a lot of force and it won't go in, I figure there are three possibilities...

1. It's going in and I don't realise - although the wheels did continue to spin.
2. It's seized/jammed due to disuse?
3. I'm not engaging it correctly - I had the normal box in neutral, and tried sliding it along both with and without the clutch in, from both Hi, Lo and Neutral on the transfer box.

Any other ideas? Thanks for any help guys, and wish me luck that the car is still there in the morning! (And that the farmer brings a tractor to tow me out!)

Mud tyres do make a massive difference....... as does a little experience, DONT GO OUT ALONE, otherwise what could happen is exactly what did happen ur just lucky to be next to your house and can keep an eye on it.

Diff lock in effect only locks the front an rear axles together and the power then takes the route of least resistance, hence ur spinning wheel on both axles.

Also put in your profile where you are based u never know, someone on here might be local and able to come pull you out or go out laneing with, sounds to me like you need a little bit of guidance - dont mean to sound patronising, but dont be afraid to ask, might get the pi$$ taken out of u but will still get the answer u need :)

As Taxed says ...

Where abouts are you? Someone with a rope and recovery stuff might pop along .. with a video camera too ... :)

To put a Landy into Difflock, the vehicle needs to be moving in a reasonably straight line at about walking pace.
My 90 (manual) will go in if forwards or reverse, but the Auto Disco will only go in if going forwards.
So when tackling anything where you might loose traction, select low and difflock prior to getting into the mucky stuff (& the right gear, normally 3rd for on the straight/up hill, 1st for steep decents)

mate where are you some LZers might fancy coming to get you OH and nobody has mentioned the most important thing:

Get some propper recovery points attached asap!

Hey, thanks for all the info and advice guys.

No word from the farmer today so I guess he isn't coming to help! Heading back out with the shovel...

I'm a few miles from Moffat if anyone is close by and wants to come tow me out/point and laugh. I already have a heavy tow rope so should be no worries there. Next purchase - definitely MUD TYRES!

no next purchase recovery points - the ones on the front of the disco are not for recovery, get some jate rings or a steering guard with built in recovery points

sounds like you could be using areas that you aint legally alloowed to. And what do you call a good tow rope?Other on here might dissagre

It's my understanding that there aren't any trespassing laws in Scotland (but I may be wrong) - but obviously yeah, it is good manners to get permission before going onto anyone's land.

(Tow rope was from when my Dad used to go off-road - about three inches thick.)

Eventually a farmer turned up - he managed to pull me out with a tractor with some big chains. (Got him a bottle of whiskey to say thanks).

Still can't get the Disco to go into diff lock. Apparently there's a guy locally who knows about Landy's so I'm going to ask him about it when I take it for him to have a look at the wheel bearing.

when i bought my disco 200tdi it wouldnt go into low range, or diff lock-so i prised open the transfer gear lever gaitor and went crazy with wd40, left it 30mins, tried it again and with a bit of force it went into low and engaged diffs. sprayed some more wd40 and it was easier.

hope this helps mate

Thanks, that sounds within my ability level at least - I know how to point and spray! Can I just remove the rubber plastic thingy and spray from there?

Do you definitely know its not engaging difflock?

Well, no.

Certainly the dash light doesn't come on, but that might not be working. I don't hear any clunk as it engages, and when I was stuck in the mud and tried engaging it I still had wheels spinning. Is there a definitive test to know if it is engaged?

you can still get stuck and have one front and one rear wheel spinning when difflock is engaged. Do a search for difflock operation and read you will enjoy or you will get slaughtered on ere! P.s the linkage is on the outside of the rubber gromit so I wouldn't think spraying it would do much good unless on the linkage.
