Hi all,

I've a mate who has bought a bit of a bargain Disco 3. It is the 2.7 diesel from 2007. There's a reason it is a bit of a bargain and that's that it has some faults! I figured a good place to start would be some decent diagnostics. I see @gstuart recommends the iid tool, although it seems pretty much the same price as a Nanocom!

Now, I happen to have a Nanocom for the P38 but the Disco has a CANBUS system, presumably the same as the L322? I seem to remember something odd about the L322 diagnostics depending on the year. Some people were using AllComms, I think. And isn't there some sort of hidden built in diagnostics? @Saint.V8 or maybe @holidaychicken can probably put me straight there. Anyway, the question is: is it possible to read anything from hidden menus or are we going to need a bespoke bit of kit for the D3? If the latter, how does the iid compare to the Nanocom? Anyone used both? I assume Hawkeye / Lynx isn't up to much, even if they can handle it?

Thanks in advance.

Hi J,

All Comms is not compatible with the LR3 (Disco 3) but RSW do a system call the 4DCan which runs on the LR3.....

Can't comment on Hawkeye or Lynx, but the IIDTool from GAPDiagnostic on the L322 is very good by all accounts.

If the faults are with the engine, a cheap OBDII scanner/reader should work on the engine ECU, as for the body systems etc, you'll need specific gear, like the IIDTool, Lynx, Hawkeye, Nanocom, 4DCan, and possibly the iCarSoft range may do something.

The MOST touchscreen will have a hidden menu (gooooooogle is your friend) but it won't tell you anything about specific vehicle faults I am afraid.

Thanks, Saint.

Yes, figured most of the engine would respond to a standard ELM reader. Unfortunately the first thing is the suspension! Not seen it yet but will start with the obvious. Bags probably shot and maybe the compressor. Will have a better idea once I've seen it but planning ahead!

hi

only had the iid so can't comment on the nanocom , have had a hawkeye before and the iid is miles ahead

as diagnostics go , found it extremely good, basically being able to tell the last time it burped , able to get live data, adjusting suspension , can get updates and flashing the ecus,

more importantly the after sales service is second to none , nothing is too much trouble, they will answer an email within 24 hours, based in canada

will go out of there way to ensure what ever problem u have with bend over backwards to resolve the issue

never found that with any other disagnostics

but that's from a personal point of view , alas well over 1,000 people from the discovery. 3 forum use the iid and also swear by it

think it's an exceptional bit of kit

may i ask where about is ur friend , as i can certainanly help all i can, along with other very experienced members

feel as the land rover is a community it's nice to be able to help out where possible

I believe RSW is the legendary Storey Wilson, who is indeed a gentleman of the American persuasion!

does look a great system

if that's the same guy , he was a computer programmer who bought a D3 and decided to write and create his own diagnostic system

it's the huge expertise and help that i like about the iid

I think his ambitions only go as far as a working car!

did see his tube videos and must take my hat off to him in admiration

has indeed created a wonderful system, think from his own experience of the D3

where abouts is ur mate located please

if it's any use , more than welcome to share what knowledge i've got and help where ever i can

If hes got the car cheap the IID bluetooth tool is just a drop in the ocean.
Airbags tough on D3, compressor not so much but theres several valves as well and they can stick/play up.
Much bigger issue with any 07 model is the oil pump, if he cant prove its had a new pump he needs to get it done asap as the consequences of failure are fatal for the engine, no just the odd bent valve etc just whole engine scrap.

He's near me in mid-Bucks. Full service history, apparently. Don't like the sound of that oil pump! Best do some reading. Think he said it'd done about 120k miles.

Is there a How To anywhere on here for the D3 airbags? I had a look in the Technical section but it is a bit thin on the ground in there! Or is everyone just looking at this?

as @lynall mentioned , if no proof , would strongly advise ur mate gets it done

reports of them failing

Not entirely sure yet. Says it doesn't do anything and says it is inactive. We've both got jobs that need doing tomorrow but migth get a chance to have a look tomorrow evening. I've just seen these things have timing belts! No chains! Ouch.
