Looking at changing oil, filters etc at the weekend and have had a quote of £17.50 for a gallon of 5w30 fully synthetic Ac Delco oil. After looking at the prices of oil at Halfords for various brands this seems very cheap, or is it just crap oil?? The quote was from a trade motor factors so i guess it should be cheaper i just didnt want to put rubbish in! I know they say you get what you pay for so any advice much appreciated!

As far as i know AC Delco dont do a 5w30 fully synthetic oil, they do however do a semi synthetic and call it Synthetic blend (its what Americans call Semi synth) hence why its so cheap ;)

Pop to your local Ford dealer and check out the price of their Formula E 5w30, its made by Castrol. :)

Do LR specify 5w30 fully synth only for the TD5 lump

Owners handbook states "ACEA A1 & B1" (SEMI SYNTHETIC) 5W/30 5W/40 5W/50.

And when was the handbook printed Nigel - 1998, 1999?

You would be lucky to find any B1 oils nowadays - currently semi synth is B3 and fully synth 5w-30 is B5.

When reviewing oil recomendations it's worth taking intio account timeframes and developments ion the market place.

Yes, you could use 10-40 semi synth, but for the little extra in cost I would argue that a fully synth oil is just better in terms of protection, friction reduction, fuel economy etc etc. I buy Carrefour fully synth 5w-30 for 21 euros per 5ltr can - so one time I buy 2 and the next time I only need to buy one. Never need to top between 6000ml intervals.

If you want to base the judgement on money, the suppliers reckon you can extend service intervals and actually save money, but that's not my argument.

Cheers
Dave

Seems to be a few different opinions on here. After another call to the auto factors the 5w30 fully synth is only a pound a gallon more than the 10w40 semi synthetic, so it's not really a question of cost. More of an issue of which one is better for the engine. My original post was more of a question of why is it so much more expensive from Halfords etc, or are they selling better quality oil?. Is one fully synthetic oil really that much better than another? I guess not to the extent of paying £38 quid a gallon compared to £17. Once again many thanks for the help!!!

Halfords oil is rebranded Comma which itself is owned by Esso. It is overpriced IMO mainly because its the first place people go

Most motor factors sell stuff like carlube which is cheaper generally especially if you buy it in 25L drums. If you have a costco card then check out the Chevron oil they do, its about £35 for 20L :)

You dont have to spend fortunes for oil but it is worth getting the best you can for the money (if that makes sense) :)

Oil from all the main names are all a muchness as well and there is very little between then so people generally buy the brand they like for one reason or another.

I dont profess to be an expert on oils as I suspect 90% of owners are not, and take labelled oil on face value. This label is off my 25L drum purchased about 12 months ago.

For those who dont know about oil specs 'A' refers to the spec for petrol engines and 'B' for diesels

A1/B1 is a fuel economy oil and is generally the thinner grades 5w20/5w30

A3/B3/B4 are performance oils and include extended drain oils

B5 is an oil that is of high performance and a fuel economy oil

So there are still plenty of B1 oils out there

Hope that helps

I used the AC/Delco 5W/30 in mine for the last oil change. It's labelled as 100% synthetic and ACEA A3/B3/B4 API SL/CF.

AC/Delco is a well known brand name and I'm quite happy with the oil - especially at £28 for 10 litres from my local parts shop.

That's a good price - including, or plus VAT?
