Hey there i see this seems to be a popular thread but with them all giving lots of diffrent things to look at i trying for a definative answer
So basically i got given a 51reg disco 2 td5 got told it was cutting out whilst driving it had recantly had brand new fuel pump fitted so i ran it round for maybe 2 months with no problems at all .
Then thats were it started going wrong it would start struggling to start then it would cut out whilst driving and be really hard to start then go a few miles dow. The road then cut out again.
So thought id stick some injector cleaner in ,boom started fine again didnt cut out running good. Great cheap easy fix, NOT.
So 3 weeks later and back to square 1 ,
Look on internet and forums so
Fuel pumps new
Changed fuel filter and housing as it snapped off but just got a 2nd hand housing
Fitted fuel pressure regulator repair kit (gasket ,diafram ,Orings ) ((never want to do that again))
Done the bleed cycle started up funning then started sounding like it was about to cut out 6mins after starting up it cuts out again
Should i try injector seals? Is there a way of testing injectors without pulling the cover off or is there anything else i should look at first?

Does it do the following?

Stop when hot.
Then restart when it has cooled down abit , say after 10/15 minutes.
Then run again for a few miles then stop again?

Cheers

Mine did that, I changed the crank sensor and it ran fine. When stopped it would be a right PITA to restart straight away. Eventually failed on the M way.
I still had a starting issue if left overnight or longer, would take a while to start ,which was resolved when I fitted new injector washers and seals.

Cheers
Is that the crank position sensor? As i have been told to look at that before

Better read the fault codes before you replace parts based on guesses cos if it's from 2001 it was the transition year between Eu2 and Eu3 engines and if it's early Eu3 i think they messed something up in the ECUs cos i've seen 4 cases of Eu3 MSB ECU with "topside switch failure" which gives the symptoms you've described, the most common is on MSB101330/340 but happens on others too so it's something to be ruled out IMO

Better late than never for a final answer

So car cut out whilst driving

1.found oil in ecu loom on plugs and in the fuse box
Remedy: cleaned it all out with the trusty brake cleaner
2. Dropped the injectors out found the carper washers missshaped and rough around the edges
Remedy : left injector tips to soak in brake cleaner over night cleaned them up so well loads of carbon in the bottom of the bowl. Replaced copper washers and runber seals.
Replaced injector harness
3. refit the lot to required torque settings and so on .

Outcome : TOUCH WOOD HAVENT HAD A SINGLE ISSUE SINCE AND ITS HAD A GOOD 5K MILES DONE IN IT OFFROAD AND IN WATER ALSO

Steve I would like to thank you with regards to sharing your final resolution in solving you’re issue!

Fantastic idea with leaving the injectors soaking in brake cleaner!
