HELP,

I am a resonably intelligent being who has a 2003 Disco 2 TD5ES.

I have it serviced each year and always pay for whatever repairs the dealer says needs doing.

At its MOT (1 month after a major service) I am told " Hummmm your front nearside diff oil seal is leaking....around £240 for parts. You cannot replace the seal, the whole unit has to go".

I took it to a non franchised LR dealer who said, "only £135 for the seal including labour.

Who is telling the truth and what is required to change an oil seal?

HELP will be appreciated.

There are a number of very good WARENTY assured garages in this country who specilise in 4x4s. I am sure if you speak to some one like tim fry's (Cheltenham) or John Craddocks (Cannock) or even someone like Grayhill 4x4 (Gloucester) they will give you a more accurate price. (John craddocks can tell you the price for the parts). I replaced all the seals on the front axel of my disco not that long ago and i brought all the seals in a kit for arounf £50. Took me all weekend to do tho!

Just goes to show what fookin robbers the main dealers are:mad:
My missus was quoted 160 +vat + labour for some work on the suspension on her vauxhall. I got the parts for 40 quid and it took me an hour and a half to do the job. If you can't do the job yourself go to an independent Landy garage you'll save a fortune.

This is frustrating.

I know that all garages have to make money to live, but I am sure they look at you and think "how much can I rip him off for?"

I am very happy to do whatever has to be done to keep my old workhorse alive and well.

However just for you all to laugh at, I have had the following go wrong and it has cost me thousands in believing the main dealers.

1. New motor for a sun roof that would open and close when it felt like it.....£480
2. New mapping for my CPU as the cruise control wanted to take over when it wanted......£360
3. New XY switch as the SC/MC warning lights kept coming on when I selected reverse......£465

Yeh, I know, I am mad.

So now I have ordered a workshop CD and had my local farming garage look at the oil seals. They poured in a bottle of sealant and said that would do the trick as it was only a trickle and nothing to worry about. It happens to a lot of 2002/2003 Discos.......Cost £17.50

When will I learn?

Fook me I only paid 500 quid for my current disco and it's cost me 6 quid for a propshaft u/j so far! You'll be one of those folks that's been on the news today as well, road tax up to feck knows how much next year. Get shot and get yerself an nice old 200tdi is what I reckon.

Yep I think you've been taken for a bit of a run by the main stealer! Good thing is though, at least now you've seen the light!
