Over the last few days the disco has developed a small but annoying chirping noise.
It is not particularly loud & only occurs over 15mph. Nothing at idle & when revving whilst moving out of gear or in gear it does not get any louder or more frequent;just a few chirps randomly.
I regularly grease my props/ujs & they are 6000 miles old. I greased them again today just in case.
It has ACE but no AC.
I was then thinking tensioner/pulley of some kind...am I right in believing that if it was related to that area, the noise would be present at idle & should really get louder/more frequent the faster I go?
I have read Urban Panzers walkthrough on his website on TVD replacement but his symptoms were a chirp on switching off the engine which mine doesnt.

Any thoughts please

Foss ;)

that was "one" of the symptoms, the other sounded like a "marble" rattling when at idle, the "squeek" or "chirp" was obviously an early warning the damper was on its way out...............got quite annoying when switching off hearing a big "eeekk"..........

mmm...no marbles yet...
it might be deceiving but it really doesnt sound like its coming from the front of the car...

right...im gonna try a new belt & tensioner first...tensioner has never been done so worth while anyway @ 123k.
I got me fan spanner & holding tool...which I believe comes off anticlockwise.
Bit confused about the tensioner though...
The bolt that tensions the belt...haynes claim to turn it clockwise to release the tension...however I have read elsewhere & on UP's site that it turns anticlockwise, like a standard bolt, to release...which would make sense due to the position of the roller in relation to the tensioner body & belt...????
Also, does the bolt holding the tensioner to the engine block also undo anticlockwise as normal?

thanks
Foss

looking at the engine, you move the tensioner ANTI clockwise to release the belt.

And the bolt just lower than that is a normal thread, so lefty loosey to remove the tensioner...............make sure you get the "peg" on the tensioner body in the hole on the block when you refit the new one

Oh and viscous fan is a lefty loosy to (normal thread)

evening!!
Need some assistance!
Not doubting anyones experience but can somebody double confirm that a TD5 viscous fan undoes to the left, anti clockwise, like a normal thread as I cant get the bugger off!! Maybe Im a weakling!

Thanks!

it does undo to the left like a normal thread, you need to wedge a large screwdriver between bolt head with an assistant holding it tight to stop fan pulley turning, then with your viscous spanner on the nut hit it very hard with a lump hammer, i had to stand on the engine to get a big enough swing on it, when you put it back on smear coppergrease on the thread to aid removal next time

It must definetly loosen anticlockwise............ try to prolong the spanner with a strong steel pipe..............or take a bigger hammer;)
