I changed Daisy's radiator about 10 days ago and all seemed good until yesterday. Without warning the radiator top hose became detached (the clue was the billowing cloud of steam and the temperature needle leaping up). Luckily we stopped straight away and the needle didn't get into the red.

I reattached the hose, let the car cool and refilled the coolant system. The car seems fine and I think we have got away with it. However the surface of the coolant hose between the bleed screw and the cylinder head has gone shiny and seems soft to the touch.

Here's my questions:

1. If I did connect the top hose and clamp correctly when I changed the radiator, how could it have blown off?
2. If I didn't connect it properly, how did it stay connected for so long?
3. Is the change of appearance of the top pipe significant? Has it devulcanised? Do I need to change it?

Regards

There were no other heating issues with the engine. Daisy is one of those D2s where the coolant level has always settled about an inch below the level in the expansion tank.

However - you have jogged my memory. The reason that the radiator needed changing in the first place was that the very bottom element of the radiator matrix had apparently expanded and cracked. It looked like it had inflated.

Is there a link?

id change it ,did engine have other heating issues,is cap working

As hinted above. The cap should " blow off " at 1.4bar. If the cap is faulty excess pressure will not be released and find any weak points in the cooling system. I wonder if your underlying over pressurisation is HG related ?.

In case you are still following this, the solution was the expansion tank filler cap. It was holding in too much pressure and that pressure had to find another way out. A quick trip to the local LR dealer and an OEM cap and the problem went away. Even our local temperatures of 40C+ haven't caused an issue since. A new OEM cap now is on the service items list to be replaced on an annual basis.
