Disco 1 rear brake pads

So... the rear brake pads are kinda low.

Two questions...

Firstly, what part number do i need to order? (or can you please point me in the right direction of a part number lookup site?)

Secondly, is it really easy to change these? i.e. remove R clips, pull out pins, keep springy wire things, brake pads fall out the top of the caliper, clean pistons, push one side back in, put new pad in, push other side back in, put other new pad in, put pins back in and reinsert R clips?

Oh, and then press the brake pedal a good few times until it beds down again, I presume.

Is that it, or have i missed anything?

And as for tools, presumably all I need is a pair of pliers (to remove the R clips) and something to push the pistons back in with, right??

That's about it for fitting although the pad retainers are different from the front, for part numbers what supplier have u in mind as they all have different numbers.

you say the pad retainers are different from the front... is it the same concept though? is it easy enough to figure out and not get wrong leaving me stuck on my drive again? is it easy enough to do with a pair of pliers and mole grips, for example?

as for suppliers... i've no idea. I couldn't even name one if I was asked to! I want them to last, basically, but don't want to pay a ridiculous premium just for the "best"... i guess that's what everyone wants though.

basically, I wouldn't even ask what brand the garage fitted - i'd just ask for brake pads and be done with it...

As easy to remove and replace as the front, and click the EBC link on this page and fill in your vehicles details of pads. I use Ultramax half the price of genuine and just as good.

Some retailers will be able to supply the correct part given the vehicle VIN number.

which one did you mean? or either?

anyway, i've tried both, and the results are weird...

they both appear to list the same stuff twice... and what's the difference between upgrade pads and original pads?

and why does one site list "upgrade pads" and "original pads" both as "original quality"? what does that mean?!?

So DP663 is your number, EBC site will explain the differens in the pads. U may save a pound or two from a supplier on eBay I did, so check them out now you know the number.

The EBC site does explain the difference between Ultramax and the other types, but not between "Original" and "Upgrade"... both of which are Ultramax! Hmm... think i'll see if EBC's own site has links to official resellers...

EBC Greenstuff low fade low dust pads are very good - designed for 4x4's.

It does, upgrade is SUV 4x4 6000 Series Brake Pads as stated in the part number listing otherwise known as "Greenstuff".

ah, ok... but greenstuff is over double the price... so which to go for... i don't do a great deal of off roading (perhaps 1 day a month at the very most)...

discool - you use Ultramax, right?

MHM - do you use greenstuff?

What do you reckon a garage would fit? probably Ultramax (or some equivalent)...

OK, so what are the advantages of greenstuff over ultimax?

Ultimax costs £20, Greenstuff costs £47.

Greenstuff keeps your wheels cleaner, but I don't care about that.

What other advantages? do they last 3 times as long? the EBC site is all about marketing... not real-life comparisons...

save time take it to garage, get them to do brakes and ask to look at the box the new pads came in, ffs!!!

I don't tow trailers nether have I ever suffered from brake fade even when braking from 100mph so my pads are just fine and no dust.
This is the first I've have tried EBC as I normally use genuine parts pads although long ago RRC days I used Mintex but the only lasted 8000 miles, rubbish.

i'd love to take it to the garage, but I can't afford another £110 for a brake pad change, when the pads could cost me £20 and it's an easy enough job.

And I also don't want another never ending thread, but having never bought brakes before, I'm also clueless in this area too

Annoyingly, on this EBC page it says unless you have greenstuff on the front already, don't put greenstuff on the back. if you have original on the front, then only use ultimax at the back. god knows why, but this is from the manufacturers.

So... on the basis that I doubt the garage put "greenstuff" on the front a month ago, it looks like i'm buying "ultimax" this time!

Unless anyone now tells me not to, that's what i guess i'm gonna do...

It's one of the easy jobs replacing pads even with my Honda that I drive where the pistons have to be wound back in, not a straight push back, so I DIY even if it is a company car I don't mind.

if I wanted pay over £40 I would go back and use genuine pads as I have always done in the past.

It will carry it on... the pads will have a wear sensor wire incorporated so unless u have this function in your disco (I don't think any/many D1s have) then just snip the two wires close to the pad to remove. The pads also fit the RRC hence the wear sensor which RRC is equipped for.
