had a whirring sound coming from my v8 auto disco 1 this last week or so had a look round the transmission/propshafts for anything obvious and found the cause.... yes you guessed it prop weight has been ripped off and the silly rubber donut has deterioated....ordered the donut from paddocks (very nice people) and then phoned a local propshaft balancing company after laughing at them for 10mins explaining that they might (yes might apparently landy rear propshafts are hard to balance) be able to balance it for £60 plus the dreaded i hung up and bought a second hand one from landranger stockport ( again very nice people) for £50 ....
nice easy prop change i thought.... undid all the back end no probs.... then i came to the transfer box/handbrake end...... one or two of these nuts just turn freely and the bolt too.... is it a nut and bolt???? if so where is the access to get in the other side ??? or are they supposed to be captive bolts?????

If the captive bolt from the drum is turning then you have some extra work in trying to stop that turning while undoing the nut when you have the prop removed then you can remove the drum and hopfully fix that that little problem

thanks for all the help and info guys problem sorted now took just half an hour.... captives were a bit loose but not as loose as i had thought (panicked) earlier.... found it very easy putting the donut on off the vehicle as explained in other threads but i also found it much easier putting it back on the diff end first then compressing it to go over the captives before fitting the last 3 bolts on the donut .... bit of loctite and a spanner up i was led to believe its supposed to be 35lb of torque (from another thread) so i think that equates to two grunts on the spanners?????
took her for a run went through low and hi range and theres still a bit of a whirring when in lowrange!!!!
as we all know landys do have a noisy transmission im just wondering what level of noise is acceptable as when mines in lowrange it sounds like my mates lsd gearbox on his rsturbo!!!!!

thanks for the pointer jp
some interesting stuff on your thread which ill be trying tommorow dunno if mine being an auto will make any diffrence???? as for trying to comment on your probs im afraid i couldnt im no expert on landys and am learning all the time..... usually every bloody time it breaks down... just come home from stockport with my shiny new donut and propshaft still shiny when it started with ignition problems!!!!!!! hoping its just a coil?????
definately a love hate relationship going on with me and my truck this month!!!!
