Hello all.

Firstly I am sure I have read the answer to this before but I've not managed to find it with a good search. I do apologise for asking a question again that has definitely been covered somewhere before.

My 300tdi disco1 has had the abs pump removed by my local independent and replumbed as a non abs model. The problem is whilst it may just about stop in time for an MOT test the brakes are nowhere near as good as my other no abs from factory disco1.

It feels like the pedal goes all the way to the stop. It does not pump up, and is firm to the stop if that makes sense.

Am I right in thinking the non abs master cylinder has a larger volume stroke and I should therefore replace the abs spec master cylinder with a non abs one to fix this problem?

If the above is correct do I need a different servo or will the abs version be functional?

Many thanks everyone

W

Sounds like when you went from ABS to non-ABS, you needed to replace all the gubbins to ensure everything worked OK. But I'd be surprised at any need to replace the servo. In fact needing to replace the master cylinder seems a bit weird too, after all, you are stopping the same weight of vehicle with the same discs, pads, callipers etc, so I don't see where ABS comes into all this. But then I don't like ABS or having some electronic brain interfering with my ability to stop the vehicle. If they don't pump up it implies there is no air in the system, but I think I would be looking to make absolutely sure by completely replacing all brake fluid. The necessary bleeding thus taking place. But you may have already done that.

The servo is the same between the two variants, the master cylinders have different part numbers, suggesting there is something different between the two items.
Brake pedal going to the floor is a sign of a faulty seal in the master cylinder.
As u are lucky to have another D1 without ABS why not compare and see what’s different in the pipe work and system. The braking should be similar between your two vehicles, the only thing the D1 ABS system does, if u had it, is stopping a wheel locking up full time so putting the vehicle into a slide, and if like my D1 that’s only in the winter on a frost or snow covered road and I have purposely slammed on the brakes to test the system. :)
