I`m looking at replacing the discs on my P38 2.5 DSE. I`ve looked thru some of the threads on here regarding what makes others have used.

Only using the car for normal road use and no towing EBC performance slotted and drilled are pointless, but whats in a name? Brembo come in at £80, Mintex come in at £75 with pads from Paddocks.

Having read some of the comments about Britpart on here, I reserve judgement .

I know, perhaps its a matter of personal choice but any thoughts would be well recieved

I've just fitted four new Britpart discs with Mintex pads from Island 4x4. The discs fitted well with no problems. I have also fitted a Britpart exhaust it was a heavy guage steel and look ok. However the N/S/R silencer hangers were set wrong so I had to break and reweld them in the correct position. I saw this statement on the Britpart website.

Britpart are now very proud to announce that all* Britpart parts and accessories will be backed by an industry leading 24 month guarantee.

Brembo are fine. I have them front and back for mine. You have a name who you'd hope knows something about brakes so quality should be fine and they're a good mid price and actually I've found less prone to warping or getting pad hotspots then some cheaper ones. By comparison to the size and weight of the vehicle the brakes are fairly small so will get hotter quicker and more often than a lighter car. Smaller Diameter, more work needed, perpendicular distance, Newton, Apple etc etc

The lack of holes in these is a good thing as drilled-through discs can lead to cracks appearing when heated and cooled. Generally fitted to high performance cars and road cars you may take on a track day to aid the "cooling" and ridding of "gases". If you believe what you read....Assuming your dont take you P38 to a track day - Flat discs -more contact area couple with a slotted pad, such as EBC ultimax HD then you'd have a good setup.

Slotted or pimpled or combination discs are fine but be prepared to buy brake pads more often and clean wheels more often.

Used ****part discs for a few years , to be honest never had a issue . more than you can say for some of there parts , but , they are very ofter bought on price and not for quality . Pay your money take your pick !!!

Should last about 3 weeks going on some reoports.

Do a search, at least one person has reported Britpart discs with incorrectly drilled holes:eek::eek:
i do know some stuff is **** ,made worse now by the big players and internet competion demanding ever cheaper prices from them (we all used to pay the same however big you was a few years ago )but sometimes you havew to wonder if people have bought or sold right bits

Lockheed are good, as are Mintex, Brembo are good but cost a fortune. I'd tend to go for cheapest established name-lockheed at the moment unless someone's doing a deal on OEM.

Don't know about the others, but got ATE paint covered discs (so they don't rust) and Pagid brake pads. The difference to OEM is very big, the brakes seem to operate much softer, but still stop the car. I have them for about 15k km and everything is well. The price was about 150€ all round.
EDIT: softer... not really good for brakes huh? i meant the feeling when braking is more "satin" like, the brakes don't bind so much on first contact but on a firm press they stop like hell.

Thanx to all that have put their opinions and options on the thread. Decieded to go with the Brembos and mintex pads.

Came across an ad, which i cant find now, for a pair of front discs costing £225, at that price I think I would just mount them on the living room wall and admire them :D

Late as usual
but I've just had a comment from my MOT examiner (ex LR main dealer) on how good my brakes are. Fronts are EBC slotted and drilled with Greenstuff pads and rears are EBC ventilated with Redstuff pads.

Mind you I got the lot for nowt.

I once fitted new discs and EBC Greenstuff pads to my 04 TD4 Freelander, squeeled like pigs! Was really horrible in slow moving traffic, even had a police officer stick his fingers in his ears! Removed the pads, more copper grease, check the anti-squeel pads were present, refit, still squeeled. Let them bed in for another 200 miles, same. Contacted EBC, they sent a new set. They squeeled. Gave up, threw them in the bin, wrote off the £54 I paid for them and fitted Mintex. Silence! No idea if the Greenstuffs worked better as everytime I braked I tensed everyting up and shuddered due to the noise!

A friend had Greenstuff fitted to her Subaru Impretza STI, first time I took that out I nearly crashed at the first roundabout, she said "you have to warm the brakes up first to get them to work". On a road car??!! Won't bother with Greenstuff pads ever again.

File a chamfer on the leading edge of the pads (don't breathe in the dust) should cure the squeal.

These pads were fitted to a road car and I wouldn't expect to use them any differently than other pads, there were no specific instructions they should be treated differently. The squeel they produced was shocking, not just a bit. I even romoved the brake disc shields in case they were acting as sound resonators. I know about bedding pads in, and have been involved in race track events. Propper race pads work best when hot, in a road car this isn't good. Drive a motorway then turn off, expecting cold brakes to stop you before then end of the slip road? I have been told that Greenstuff pads have had many changes of formula over the years, so current stuff may be different, but this does make me wonder why EBC have had to change the formula? If Greensuff and other performance pads are supposed to be superior, then why don't they get fitted as OEM I wonder.......
