Does anyone knows if this is possible on the P38? Happy to keep central locking function but don't need alarm or immobiliser so wondering if they can be disabled in say Testbook or something. It would also avoid the famous BECM / ECU handshake problem I think?

very fair offer mate thanks! so i can't tempt you with some fine prussian pils and hairy armpit women then? :D

actually i have access to an autologic and to testbook. now that i know it can be done shall have a root around.

cheers!
r

you can disable it in the becm via rovacom, shouldnt take more than 10 minutes. if you was closer to me i would do it for you mate no problem.

Ive looked into this in a big way and it is possible, there is a unique number thats for yours and only your p38, get this from landrover then find some1 with the right diagnostic to plug in and enter the code, i was told by the expert at stratstone landrover in bury (Steeve workshop manager) that this code will turn the immobiliser off perminantly, making it the same as p38 in austrailia as there were never exported with the immob function working, this is true and word for word... any questions just ask me... want you code ring STRATSTONE LAND ROVER in bury lancashire and ask for steeve in the workshop, have your chassis number ready.:tea::bounce::bounce::D:D

If you go into becm programming and change to dubbi spec it will shut the alarm function off but as most of the problem with the immobiliser is the remote sensor picking up stray signals and waking up the becm and loosing the sync I cannot see what will be achieved.
You can disconnect the afield which does help or fit a new reciver but if you alter the setting you will need to inform the insurance too

cheers all. will be trying to reprogramme tomorrow and if i can't do it with autologic i'll try your idea mike and ring steve.

voguese, dubbi spec? insurance is not a problem in this case.

Mike and Voguese, thanks again for your help! I rang Steve, he was quite friendly. He wanted to give me the EKA code first and then when I explained that I had that and wanted an immobiliser code he said it wasn't necessary and confirmed we can change the spec to Australia in Testbook etc. I'm taking the car to my friend with the Autologic this weekend and we will play around, first to see if we can specifically kill the alarm and immob or else explore what the Australia and Middle East specs will change.

Meanwhile the intermittent lockout has stopped ever since I changed the cable from the alternator to the battery positive terminal (it was getting very hot, almost too hot to touch and losing close to a volt along the way) and charged the battery fully. I also found a couple of loose earths and even some harness connectors that had jarred loose. It comes from the fast bush sprints that the car does every now and then, I sometimes take it on a 600k run through the bush. Its a trip that most people take 15 hours over but the P38 can do in 12 or 13. She's a wonderful car when everything works I tell you but it must rattle the teeth around in her skull more than a bit! :)

Just to update, I was able to use Autologic to change the country spec.

Arron, I wasn't able to switch off the entire immobiliser, just the passive (that's the ignition barrel interrogating the key fob when inserted).

Mike, Aussie spec switches off the passive immobiliser and keeps the alarm. It also keeps EKA enabled.

Voguesy, Gulf spec did the job, no alarm and no immob. Incidentally there is Middle East spec and there is Gulf spec. so anyone who does this in the future make sure you choose the right one.

I did notice the BECM was "Locked". Do they come like that from the factory or was it perhaps my stealer who serviced the car for the first 9 years being a pillock? Anyway I don't know if detailled access to alarm and immobiliser settings are behind the lock screen. Incidentally, Mike, I think that special code you referred to might have been the BECM unlock code? Anyway you don't need it to change country settings.

In general pleased to find not too many faults, went through all the subsystems. Reset ECU adaptive trims. I always do that when I change filters because I always clean stepper motor, TPS and MAF at the same time. I just love the way the car drives on default mapping so my next project is to figure out how to switch off adaptive trimming. Might actually end up with a less smarty-pants and more dependable car by the time I'm done!

Ecu adptive is the ecu learning the driver and also adpting for the wear in the engine and compensating to give as best as it can

that's my job as the driver. far too smarty-pants, this car, as previously observed and that is what i'm trying to change!

how about this, i read somewhere if it gets no signal from the lambdas it will revert to and run on the default mapping? anyone hear something similar?

i think this might be what im after:)
a while ago i started a thread about disabling the alarm and immobiser on a p38 so i could fit a after market alarm with remote start
i was told its not possable but reading this i think i could be misinformed!
can it be done and what are the hazards? ie. could the becm realise its been tampered with and lock up:eek:
ive got a £400 cliford i pulled out of my last car (mondeo st200) and its just been sat in the box under my bed for months

Under your bed is the best place for it. The P38 is pretty much thief proof and the electronics do not take kindly to being interfered with, so even though it's possible to disable the alarm in the BECM fitting your aftermarket alarm may cause you all sorts of problems:eek:

just goes to show how sedate i've become, finally took her for a fast run and at 120km/h I started to get a speed limiter warning and infernal beeping! car went right through to 160 but the beeping never stopped until we were back down to about 110. I'm linking this to the change in country spec. I know that Japanese domestic market cars (used to) have a speed warning built in, can anyone tell me who's lived there whether this also the case for Gulf??

There are two options in the Becm settings for the maximum speed warning setting....either 100 or 120 mph on UK programmed models. As far as I know, it cannot be disabled, only set at one or the other. They are usually set at 100 but I have set them at 120, including on my own car.
You can go over this speed but the continuous beeping etc. is the price you pay.

Just to clarify, if you select Gulf spec as an country code then it will disable the immobiliser? so therefore no more keycode lockout problems? I was under the impression that this was impossible to do. Maybe rick can confirm?
This is a big issue for lot of owners i suspect.

You pressed the speed limit warning button on end of left stalk by mistake rasheed ?

Quite like me to do something silly like that mate but not this time!

Hi John. You can reach 120mph in yours? Don't think mine can, thats nearly 200 km/h I think! I wouldn't mind it beeping at that speed but at 120km/h (around 70 mph?) its ridiculous. And more to the point, it didn't do it before. I've a question for you though, what's beyond the BECM lock screen? As I've never been, what can one actually do in there?

Yes. But as someone mentioned earlier you may need to inform your insurers.
