Disabled offroader

hi i want to build a offroader for a friend who is wheelchair bound has any one done this or has pictures of a landy that has this type of convertion.
i must add that the wheel chair has to go in the landy not just the person
ps im not interested in all the health and safety crap that seems to tie up just about any think that might be fun in red tape

Do they have upper body strength, just out of curiosity?

and also out of curiosity are there wheelchair bound offroaders here ... would be very cool to see what can be done to a landy

Im working on a project to get my disabled 19 year old son out laning with me.He's has no strength at all and cannot weight bear(Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy).I have visited Autochair in Alfreton who supply a people lift called Millford.This will hoist him outta his powerchair in a sling and into the 90.His chair will then be loaded on the back,probably with waffleboards
To secure him nice and snug, there is a recaro seat in and the plan is to install a decent harness to hold his body firm.
I know that no disabilty adaptation is the same but this is how we will do it!
At least he can enjoy the lanes with his 'ol man!

Do you mean that the disabled driver sits in his wheelchair instead of the front seat using hamd controls?

yeah.. that seems to be what english111 is attempting.. no reason wy not and I wondered if there was already someone doing it...

I had always wanted a landrover but never had the excuse to be able to justify it. When my father in law got cancer it got to the point where he could hardly walk. I bought him an electric wheel chair buggy thing. If it went in my car there wasn't enough room for 4 people and the dog. This led to my getting my first landy. A v8 110 csw. I got a set or ramps and would ride his buggy into the back and then we could all get in the front 2 rows. Even after he passed away I kept the landy and my passion for them has grown from there.

I bet it made him feel a lot better about going out Independence is taken for granted until its taken away.

Your not joking there. I still have the buggy. My mother in law has bad legs and walking is getting progresively more difficult for her. I am trying to persuade her to make use of it. At the moment she is refusing. If they get bad enough i may be able to persuade her yet.

yes he has use off arms but very little strenth i would like to build the landy so he can self load and drive if possible, may be some sort of winch that could pick up the wheel chair and secure it in a driving position

Can he slide from one seat to another without help?

You would need a 90csw as they don't have a bulkhead.
If you bought some alloy extending ramps from a disability assistance shop and mount a small winch in the rear load area, he can winch himself up the ramps and access the landy via the rear doors.

Remove the drivers seat and mount a swivel plate like those used in a campervan to allow the seat to rotate 360 degrees. He could then slide from his wheel chair into the driving seat. He would need to be able to get his legs over the seat box but I am sure you can find away around it.

Alternatively the same process but with a disco commercial might work better as they don't have a seat box to get in the way of the wheel chair so you may be able to slide the wheelchair straight in and slot it into some sort of chock arrangement to stop it moving.

You may need to fit smaller wheeels to the chair or lower it to enable him to have headroom. It has to be easier to lower the chair than raise the roof though.

The ramps that I used cost about £200 and extended to about 9ft long. The winch I used as a back-up in case of a flat battery on the chair was a 1500lb superwinch which I powered by a second battery in the rear tub that was charged via a split charge relay.

I dint think they did? In that case it'll need to be a 110csw with all the rear seats removed.

from reading about this disabled lad, i dunt think he would be able to get out of his chair and into a modified seat. also, i doubt a disco would be able to acomodate a chair instead of a seat.the seat height would need to be around 12" for him to be able to look through the windscreen, and then you have to have an aperture large enough to be able to get the wheel chair into the car. personally i reckon your only chance would be looking at something like the pope mobile

I could ride my father in laws electric buggy thing into the back of my 110 but I did have to bend right over. You may well be right.

hate to bring up slitty's but the japanese do something to estima's like this:



could that sort of arrangement work for your lad?

how hard/easy would it be to make this in a LR do you guys reckon?
