We'll spent all day getting the engine and gearbox and transfer box out of my disco chassis. Used soooo much jizer to get all the thick grease off, and now the pressure washer needs a pressure wash.
Next step is to take apart the gearbox and fit a new primary shaft so it will fit into the landy with the defender bell housing. What goodies and surprises will we find inside the gearbox.
Never taken a gearbox apart before. Looking forward to it.

Off to the restoration show tomorrow so it looks like an evening job. We'll several evenings.

I have two other defender gearboxes one in lots of bits and one complete. The complete one make a right racket in reverse. So that will be the next one to be rebuilt.

only 56a defender boxes have an input shaft with 22 gear teeth ,50a have only 21,worth checking, all disco and rrc are 22 gear teeth

Hummmmmm may have to take apart the gearbox which has the bad reversing noise. And find out what is going on the there.
I suppose I could rebuild the discover box with all the gears I have, it may end up going backwards with 5 gears and forward with one. Could be fun.lol

you can interchange a good few parts ,but check gear teeth number and thickness, reverse will be the idler gear they arent dear new if your lucky it wont have damaged layshaft but sometimes they do

Looking forward to stripping them down now. I will have to buy two gasket sets now. The gearbox that has the reverse problem has been put together by a guy who lover the silicon gun. He must have used a full tube to seal it. 50% of it is hanging out side. Can't wait to open it up. I will take lots of pictures for a laugh. Thanks for the info. Kev

lt77s are best with gaskets and r380s silicone or similar ,removing a gasket removes 12 thou which will effect preload and shimming
